I have a very old Dometic fridge works fine on gas but the one time I tested it, it went through a 20lb bottle in a day or two,
Is that normal consumption?
Are the newer units any more efficient? If so, where does that efficiency come from, the technology is the same, right?
Is the flame/output adjustable?
thanks

I've used RV propane refrigerators from 1972 models on. I don't recall any of them using that much fuel per day. Seems that they would run for at least a month. Now other propane appliances will help to zap a tank pretty fast. ie furnace, water heater, stove & oven.

I can not imagine how you could go through that much gas. I would be looking somewhere for major leak. I fill my big tank on the motor home once ever 3 years or so. I run the refrigerator a total of 4 weeks per year.
My old Norcold that came with the coach in 1976 and my new Dometic that I installed 4 or 5 years ago use the same amount of propane.

I'm not sure at all. It was a few years ago. I fired it up, it got cold, and then the bottle emptied very quickly. I just assumed the frdge was junk.
I've since learned a bit about these things so I'm revisiting the question before I rip out the fridge,
So are we saying that the old ones can work about as well as newer ones?
Thanks

The 20# bottle should last almost a month with a small propane RV refrigerator, and 15 to 20 days with a larger one like used in the GMC. Very little change in the efficiency from older ones to new ones. Yea, I am a tester, and have done the tests, but not recently, and have only memory for reference now.

are you sure you didn't get ripped off on the charge for 20# of propane? I don't think the pilot orfice is any larger on the old versus new units and that is the only thing the propane is used for.

Dave,
I did a Google search for "propane refrigerator gas consumption" and this
popped up:
http://www.warehouseappliance.com/propane_gas_refrigerators.htm
These are way bigger than the fridges in an RV so I assume ours would
consume less.

I reconnected the LP and fired it up again.
It still works. It's the original fridge (46 years old) and it seems to work great. I have not touched it in four years.
I think i figured out the LP consumption; the LP control seems to stuck on max. The flame is awfully big and it won't go down.
The label says 1300 btus max. so a 15 lb bbq bottle will last about nine days.
So maybe my recolecion was off or maybe the bottle was not completely full.
Either way, i'll fix the controller and keep the fridge.
I love old things that work.
