I stream to the internet at 96kb/s-128 kb/s & the sound quality with mp3 is very good. CD quality is 64kb/s, so anything over that is gravy. It really depends on what the player is able to handle. Files can be saved at up to 320 kb/sec. 128 kb/sec is a good compromise when saving files to a HD or flashdrive. The smaller the number, the smaller the file size.
These numbers are at a sample rate of 44.1 KHz...

It's really a little more complicated than that. Creating an MP3 from a CD obviously limits your quality to that of the CD, it cannot be any better, and if you sample at a different rate than the CD rate, 44.1 khz, you can get weird aliasing noise.
Remember that a CD is not and never was meant to be high quality, it is just good enough to sound good.
If you've ever heard a DVD audio at 24 bit 192khz in 5.1 surround sound on a reference audio system you know that there is a LOT of quality space above a CD!
We did a comparison between the same song recorded as above in Surround, WMA and MP3 and believe me, the MP3 really sounded like it had a wet blanket thrown over some cheap speakers. the WMA was pretty good, but the 5.1 version was amazing.
This was done in Minnetonka Audios test lab a few years ago
