What format did you end up using to get lossless recordings? I've been trying to find a car receiver
that can play FLAC files (lossless, open source), but no luck so far. We have a large
music collection stored this way and I'd really rather not convert them all to a
lossy format like mp3.

Well I had the choice of MP3 or WMA, so I choose WMA @192.
FLAC would be better, but at least the WMA takes off the MP3 wet blanket

I'm still using the Sony MiniDiscs. They never had the loss of MP3 and the portable recorders were a recording studio in your hand. My Sony stereo in the GMC accepts a plug for a Minidisc changer and I have a nice collection of Minidiscs to travel with. I just change the music style with my traveling mood. I know, I know, the MD is not sold, but the format and the flexibility the MD recorders afford you make them more than worth while keeping. I am still collecting them when I find them.
I don't think you will find your format in a car stereo. I don't recall seeing it on the list.
They claim MP3 is not that bad, do you really HEAR the difference??? In a noisy old car/GMC as you go rolling down the road???
Good luck in your search.

Karen,
There are several lossless encoding systems like FLAC, Ogg Vorbis (really) and then there is *.wav which is CD data with no compression at all. As an album in native format is about 640meg, you should be able to put 10 or so on a 8g SD card.
The level of loss when converting to MP3 is adjustable with most software. Unless you have a really impressive sound system, the mid-level does a great job for "road music" and a single cd can run 5+ hours. The best MP3 files (not what usually downloads cheap) are hard to tell from the original CD. My hearing has gone bad and lot of the high frequency response has been lost, but am still very sensitive to slew rate (wave shape) and sound image issues that escape many listeners.
Find a LAME MP3 encoder to play with, turn it up so it makes big files and you may just change your mind.
