Anyone driven California highway 20 between 101 and i5 during the winter??
I plan to come down 101 from Oregon on Sunday and would like to arrive in
Sacramento Monday about noon. I'm worried about snow this time of year;
really don't want to drive in it towing a toad (or without a toad for that
matter). I don't see any passes on my road atlas, but that doesn't mean
they are not there. Any alternate route suggestions?? Thanks.

As an alternate, you can take 299 It starts just north of Arcata and cuts over to Redding. It's much further north, but a great drive. Lots of twists and turns and has some good grades, but a beautiful drive. Follows along the Trinity River.
If you were in a sports car, it's hard to beat.

As for 20, my uncle just got into town from his house in Lucerne and it is currently snowing there. That said, 20 is a pretty manageable route and caltrans is active all winter in the area keeping the roads clear. It does have a few sections of steep climbs, but has turnouts pretty regularly.

Gerald,
You shouldn't have any problem with hwy 20, it is well traveled and not as high altitude pass as 299. I don't ever recall of requiring chains on 20 at Clear lake. You'd pick up hwy 5 at William. Any further south on 101 and you'd have to cut across to Fairfield and catch hwy 80 east.

Another way that's nice to drive is hwy 16, from hwy 20, about 20 to 25 mile East of Clear Lake Oaks, and go through Rumsey, Esparto, to Woodland and catch hwy 5 there. The Almond blossom should be starting to show. Hwy 16 is a lazy good 2 lane road, the last few years a casino was built off of 16, and that could be a rest stop, time permitting.

Have a safe trip, and hope this helps.

If road conditions are a concern, take 20.

More Cal Trans trucks and cops to deal with problems
and fewer turns and happier stomachs.

The Calif Highway Patrol has a web site showing current
issues. http://cad.chp.ca.gov/

or http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi

Also, live camera look at Hwy 299
