How about a rally held in the middle of the country say Table Rock Lake MO. So the newbies we are trying to get involved who are generally younger with families ie. kids and still working fulltime. The summer is the only time they can attend these functions. Even though I am call an old f@$t by my co-workers I still am working almost full-time started progressive retirement this year.

I'm actually pretty happy about the topic. You have people throwing out ideas AND volunteering to help. That's pretty good for the folks trying to organize one of these big events. There are a lot of great areas of the country to see in a GMC and I think it's great that the planners move them around to take advantage of them.

As for having them in summer, I think the same problem comes up time and again. That is the busy time for these campgrounds and it either gets very expensive, or very difficult, to take over a place over the weekend. I'm sure there are campgrounds that will do it, but most are fairly reticent to do so during their busy season.

I'm glad someone else has things pop into his mind like you've just
expressed. In particular, I'm referring to attracting new owners. Picking a
time and place is always a problem. The second problem is getting presenters
lined up so that you have a great program that is as comprehensive as
possible -- some things for the new technical types and some things for the
more experienced. The third problem is always timeframe.

I've about decided it is almost impossible to do without some better
cooperation/integration among the technical clubs.

I think the DuQuoin event went well for both GMCES and GMCMI. We had some
people present for the weekend that wouldn't have been attracted for a
typical weekday event. I know that for some I'm hitting on a sore spot. But,
the fact remains -- younger owners need things over the weekend and within
about a day's drive or so if they are to be attracted to a GMCMI convention.
Otherwise, GMCMI will continue to cater to an older crowd.

In other posts some have speculated about summer. As Jeremy mentions,
finding some place for summer could be expensive because it is in the prime
season. However, I'm not sure about that. Good Sam/Camping World put on an
annual rally right in the middle of summer. The draw a big crowd. They take
up a lot of space. So, I'm thinking finding a suitable site isn't a problem.
After all, what large facility isn't happy to have their space booked
regardless of who it is - GMCers or Airstreamers.

Personally, Amana Colonies is more central than Patterson, Louisiana.
Shucks, DuQuoin, Illinois was also pretty centrally located. We had great
weather at DuQuoin, too.

As to a spring event, that is difficult to plan around. Kim and crew don't
have an easy task.

The attitude of the people out West is smiler to he days of Wes C.
Wes hated Ralph Lubey that all I heard from Wes when I ordered pars
from him was that Ralph was a person I should avoid.
Now, it has no changed much, most out here gripe about how much we
were charged for this and that, but forget who provided the free
coffee and ice cream,etc.
I enjoy coming out to the Central and even Eastern part of the USA
where people find that my slanted eyes and bucked teeth are quite an
attraction at the International.

Don't forget the glow from your forehead. It drives the wives crazy.

Jim, you move that edge of the country this way about 1500 miles and you'll
make lots of folks happy.

Your story reminds me of my days on the farm. A cow can be standing in
sweet, green grass up to her knees and she'll put her head through a barbed
wire fence to get the grass and weeds from the other side.

Pay no attention to the complaints. Everyone likes to complain.

Byron

My favorite teacher in H.S. had a sign up in the room that said "Excuses are like armpits, everyone has them and they stink." My favorite professor in college had a sign up in his office that said "Complaints are like farts, everyone makes them and they stink." I always wondered if it was me that was weird for my 2 favorite professors both having the same theme proudly displayed, or if it was just coincidence.

Well, as Jim has stated, we get to see few folks that look like him in the Midwest. So, it is good that everyone gravitates toward his table for a look see.
This is a very hard topic to deal with. FMCA has a similar problem in that there are only a few places that they can go and be taken care of like they expect. I think they have 5 states. Seems I learned this in a meeting in Redding last August.
When I was working I rushed home to look at pictures that Arch always put up. Now Arch no longer attends so I try to do what he did for folks that can not attend, as do many others. Most of us are old now and don't have a job anymore, although I may be looking soon, and therefore things still need to cater to us old guys. Having tech seminars on weekends is a good thing as long as the number of working people show up to support that. I recall Jeremy, and others, coming for a weekend because they still work. That gets them a good taste of the comraddary we have out here and makes them long for it all the much more.
I am done. The shop is opening. I have decisions to make.
Thank you for your support.

Dan -- I tend to rush home to see the pictures you post of every convention, so I'd say thanks for taking over that vital role! We did show up to Dothan just for the weekend, unfortunately it was the convention before some of the seminars were shifted to the weekend. Still was great to put faces to names, see some vendor wares in person, and just look at the variety of coaches and upgrades people have done. I'd urge newbies, seminars or not, to attend an International Convention even for a day if it is clost to home. The organizers go out of their way to set up a "pay by day" situation so you get to enjoy, and pay for, what you get to attend.

Byron and I had an oft-list email discussion of weekend sessions at one point and he said it paid off in TX of IL with some weekend attendees. I think that's really great and I hope it continues to be attract new folks. I also think that for the sake of working newbees, it really doesn't matter where convention is located. If you aren't going to come for the week, then convention probably needs to be 4 hours or less away to show up for the weekend. We probably have a smattering of newbies 4 hours from EVERYWHERE in this country!

I would say though, rather than just throw out our hometowns for convention, try and add a facility that would work. The Memphis suggestion had the offer of two different volunteers, a facility, and some activities. That's a pretty good start for the organizers to look into!

Thanks,

Would be a great place for a National Convention as far as National availability, should be same distance from both sides and in between.

I hardly think any of Jim K's physical characteristics
have anything to do with the welcome he receives at any
location. The ways in which he supports this community

As a newbie, I thought I would just share a few thoughts on this subject. I am 35, my wife is 33, and i have two daughters, 3 and 4 years old. I have just picked up the GMC last fall. and it is a project, but it does drive, run and work.

I have not been to a rally yet as just owning my GMC for less then 4 or 5 months now. I do hope to attend one or two this summer. most probably the local midwest rally's.

there is a simple few things that guide decisions my family on what to do and where to go for activities.
those are:
1.money
2.time(does it interfear with other plans)
3.my wife and 2 daughters is probably the most deciding factor.

I have to convince my wife that the rally would be a great place for her and the two kids to go. that is probably my most deciding factor. Keeping them happy so i can enjoy the tech sessions.

it is easy for me to have common ground with other GMC people. We all like our gmc's. it is probably more difficult for my wife to meet others with the same interests.

my biggest challenge as a newbie convincing my wife that a GMC is the way to go rather then one of those fancy one's for sale down the road, allowing me to keep the GMC as in the first place.
