Custom Grills: who makes them? [message #115365] |

Well as mentioned in my post I saw a GMC yesterday, and it had a real trick grill, it had what looked like raised GMC letters on fron of a chrome wire crosshatch mesh. It really changed the look of the rig to much more modern. In fact I didn't recognize it immediately as a GMC till I took a second look. So I'm interested in seeing some photos of an aftermarket grill and any info as to who makes them, or if these are even still available...

J, that first one looks pretty much exactly like the one I saw yesterday. Any idea who made it? I would like a different from stock look. Also the one with the bumperless front end, is that a photoshop, or an actual coach? I've also thought of billit slat grills which have found their way on a lot of the newer mustangs, those would look nice as well. But I really like that mesh grill because it does update the look considerably...

No clue on owners/locations. Should do a better job of indexing and making notes on the pictures I collect. LOL

On custom grilles, the 1st one does have some home-made look to it, but, if the outer surround was polished aluminum or stainless, or chromed, and the screws weren't such a contrasting color, it would look a lot better. The "mesh" screen is somewhat like what the GMC Denali's use (or maybe Dodge pickups, there are a lot of slightly different patterns out there, including from the hardware store). It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make. In about 5 years or so, I should have enough of my to-do list knocked down to give it a try!
The second one is very much in keeping with the more recent GMC Trucks, with the chrome and deep outer surround, and multiple cross bars. And, it looks challenging to make.
The third "two bar" one is more in keeping with the prominent horizontal front end cues on the more recent Chevy trucks. May look nice, but would cause a GMC designer to cringe.

Dan,
I saw that grill when I was down at Jim's, it is gorgeous! He told me that
Ray Cruz had it made out in California. He told me what it cost but I can't
remember the figure but I do remember noting that it was "over the top."

Duce, it wasn't me, of course, but I am interested in a special grille. I
have two of the old ones, but just feel there is something out there that
will set the front of the coach off. Jim Bounds had one made but most of us
can not afford one like went into the 26 ft. Duramax. So, keep me in mind if
you run onto something special.

The first one, on the blue coach is mine. The inner part with the holes is polished stainless steel. It actually has more open area than the original.
The surround is what is left of the original grill. It is temporary. I am working on a stainless or chrome or painted metal replacement. It is designed so the inner part is just bolted onto a frame and can be replaced with any number of different kinds of metal. the frame is square steel tubing, but if it were aluminum tubing or angle it would be pretty light.
I just need more time!

Keith,
Thanks for the added details. It's a really good start, and would look awesome if you did the next part. I can relate to the time part, the 5 years away before I could give it a try wasn't a joke. When that gets closer, I wouldn't mind comparing notes.

Keith,
Thanks for letting us know that it's yours and I assume you haven't had any
problems with your GMC running hot?
The reason I ask is the grills in Double Trouble and The Blue Streak have
seen better days and I was going to make one out of expanded metal but
hesitated when it was noted that it could/would cause airflow problems.
