Hi all,
I just recieved my Eagles from Jimk !
Does anyone have a tire recommendation?
Can I run load range D and would they give me a better ride?
I do pull a trailer.
Tire air pressures would be appreciated also.
Thanks in advance

Robert,
There are 412 correct answers about tires. I am sure the following will not be one of them but I will venture the suggestion that you get Es.
I happen to have Toyo E's on our coach and it rides like velvet. They are ragwalls. But I am sure that Toyos are the worst tire I could have chosen and I should expect to go out and find 6 flats later today. But anyway, E's can ride very well.

Bob,
Ok, Lets start the tire war again, only kidding!
I have run the Goodyear tires, Firestones and I now run the BF Goodrich Radial TA tire and really like the ride and the only one that I would buy personally. I would still suggest the E rated tire as the few dollars that you might save if frankly not worth it. I have run all steel tire on the coach and the ride was stiff and sometimes directional. The best ride I have had is with all poly sidewall tires and what is on the coach now. At minimum I would run with a polyside wall on the front and if you wanted steel belted on the rear. IMPO I would run the 225 size tire. Running a larger tire (235 or 245) may gain you a higher load rating but you can run in to clearance issues in the rear and you lose final drive ratio the larger tire that you use.
See: http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Brown_Drive_Tire_Ratios.pdf
You will get a lot of suggest here and you should look at all of them. I would avoid low cost tires. The BF Goodrich tire runs in the $145 thru $175 range depending where you shop.

Hi Bob,
As you may or may not know , I'm doing the final drawings prior to having caliper adapters and backing plates manufactured for the Kelsey Hayes park brake calipers. I have very good drawings for the Alcoa Classics but to ensure necessary clearance tolerances, I need the inside measurement of the Eagle at its smallest dimension. The smallest dimension of the Alcoa is 13.844" diameter. How does the bump on the inside of the Eagle compare to this? Call me collect at (519) 368-7129 or email me at branscoa@bmts.com , Thanks and regards. Albert Branscombe

Al,
I don't have Eagles so I can't help with your fundamental question.
But related: I understood from our previous discussions that the K-H
calipers were not that widely used, so may be hard to find. If that's true,
should we all begin to harvest them as we visit junkyards? Even if only as
cores?

Al,
CRS being what it is, you'll need to tell us all again what the application
is, else we'll have a hard time finding them. :-)

Hi Ken,
With regards to application, the book says : 1975 thru 1979 Ford Thunderbird, 1975 and 1976 Lincoln Cont. MK - IV , and 1977 thru 1979 Lincoln Cont. MK - V. I see on the RockAuto site in the last few days one can get a pair of said calipers, ceramic pads, and hydraulic hoses for just under $100.00,

Bob,
OK, here goes!
DOES ANYONE HAVE A TIRE RECOMMENDATION?
I run Kumho Road Venture KL-78 and I am happy with them.
They make D load range:
http://tinyurl.com/4q467ds
and E load range:
http://tinyurl.com/4zdncjv
CAN I RUN LOAD RANGE D?
Yes, as long as you inflate them to the correct air pressure required for
the weight of your coach.
WOULD THEY GIVE ME A BETTER RIDE?
The air pressure required for your coach would not change if you install D
or E load range tires.
TIRE AIR PRESSURES WOULD BE APPRECIATED ALSO.
I run 60 psi in the front tires and 55 in the rears.

Albert,
I saw your prototype at DuQuoin and I reckon you have come up with an
excellent way to install a caliper with a parking brake on the rears wheels.
If I might be so bold as to suggest that if one was to fit four of these
calipers and connect them to your excellent parking brake cable kit they
might even be able to stop a GMC!
Is it your intention to sell a kit that includes all the bracketry to mount
them but not the calipers?
That makes sense as you would get charged duty to import them from the USA
into Canada which you would have to pass on.
Could you be so kind as to include a link (or the part number required) to
the correct RockAuto part?
Thanks,

Hi Ken,
Good to hear from you, I would recommend getting a couple , if for no
other reason; to take them apart and familiarize ones self with their
internals. From the dozen I've taken apart they appear "bulletproof" but
they can be irreparably damaged by not pushing the piston home properly when
doing a pad replacement. The piston has to be PUSHED and TURNED at the same
time. Failure to do this may result in the adjuster can being dislodged from
the inside piston bore. You'll be amazed at the simplicity compared to the
Eldorado caliper of the same vintage. I have designed the new SS 318 levers
so an extra O-Ring can be used at the lever shaft seal as a backup to the
OEM seal to prevent any moisture seepage along the shaft.

I have the LTX M/S LREs and they ride and balance nice. I have also heard that the BFG Commercial T/As are good. Inflation is max at 80 on LRE but should be derated per the weight of your coach. As stated that's usually 60-65 front and slightly less in the rear. The LTXs are rag walls with the belts being steel IIRC. Somewhere there was a posting table that gave the recommended inflations based on weights.

Al,
American Eagle refused to give me the dimensions to the wheels.
They think I'm going to copy it.
If it clears the Alcoa, it should be good enough.

I fully appreciate the efforts and progress being made with regards to rear disc brakes, the reaction arm system, and a functioning park brake. These are all great improvements for our coaches. I still find that because these upgrades are still based on 30+ year old components we will eventually run into a parts availability issue as the suppliers drop the old stuff from their catalogs. We are already seeing the old stuff becoming harder to find on a daily basis. Anyone who shops at Rockauto has already received several clearance sale notices for many of the Toronado based parts. It will continue to get worse.
As a younger GMC owner, I am concerned about investing lots of money into an upgrade that might become near impossible to keep serviceable 10 years down the road. For the best long term survival of these dinosaurs (GMCs) we should be attempting to design our upgrades around components from current model vehicles were possible. This makes for easier sourcing of parts further down the road into the future.
I understand that Albert has done exhaustive research on finding a caliper that will actually work reliably for us. It is just too bad that the best candidate ends up being a 30+ yr old component that the Ford hotrodders are always pursuing.
Albert, do I understand correctly that you will be supplying the lever for these calipers? That will atleast be a big help over using the caddy calipers.

" Downunder Rob " WROTE :

Rob,
As well as the prototype mockup at DuQuoin, we also had the same installed on our coach'es rear most wheel set. with the OEM 70mm calipers on the intermediate wheel set ( these 70 mm calipers are actually 75mm , I don't know why they are called 70mm ??? ) .
Two reasons prompted me to take on the Kelsey Hayes caliper project, 1/ I have always wanted to develop some sort of an " Emergency brake" and 2/ To provide an effective disc park brake to complement the new reaction rod system. Just 2 of these calipers on the rear most wheel set is all that's needed, and a 2 conduit stainless cable system with distance multiplication .
Your absolutely correct inyour assesment of shipping components into Canada, modifying them and then shipping them back into the USA, what a PITA, not to mention the economic consequences ! . I plan to supply the backing plates, caliper anchors, spacers, modified rotors, necessary Grade 8 fasteners, cables and levers. The calipers, CERAMIC brake pads, banjo bolts and hydraulic hoses will be procured locally by prospective customers. Even the component manufacture and modifications to the rotors will be done exclusively in the USA.
Rob; see the note I wrote to Ken Henderson for the vehicles that used these calipers. We had our power actuator hooked up at DuQuoin and was concerned that it was clouding test results, when we returned home, I disconnected it and tested the caliper on 11% to 13% grades in both up and down directions and found the coach could be held stationary with about 7 out of 10 turns on the park brake handle knob. Now the handle wasn't easy to pull but it could be done with one hand.

Albert,
I happen to have one new Eagle wheel from JimK unmounted still in the box. If you like, I'd be willing to Loan it to you as long as it eventually finds it's way back home. I won't need it for quite some time as my coach is presently frameless.

Jim K. and Les Burt basicly WROTE :
Eagle wheel dimensions, thanks Les for the kind offer, I really appreciate it. Could you AND Jim K. measure the inside bump on the Eagle to preferribly to 3 decimal places ( which rules out a yardstick LOL ) , this inside bump would be the limiting factor to the Kelsey Hayes caliper mount. I have to commit to a minimum of 25 SETS of these components, BAD, BAD NEWS if they were designed for the Alcoa but didn't fit into the Eagle. If the most restrictive dimension of the bump diameter is greater than 13.844" , then all's OK , if not then I will have to have a wheel to profile.
As a matter of interest , I'd much prefer to have modern components, I was most impressed with the TRW parkbrake caliper but it maxes out at 45mm, RATS!!! , the only other caliper that has similar features to the Kelsey Hayes caliper is the military and A1 Hummer at a cool price of $400.00 minimum per caliper. As rotors have increased in size over the past few years, calipers have gotten smaller unfortunately.
Cheers...Albert

X2.
I have the same tires and the same recommendations. These are also very good on wet grass, mud, and snow.

Subject: [GMCnet] Tire recommendation
Hi all,
I just recieved my Eagles from Jimk !
Does anyone have a tire recommendation?
Can I run load range D and would they give me a better ride?
I do pull a trailer.
Tire air pressures would be appreciated also.
Thanks in advance

My though was 'must be a texter' My fingers are too large to enter that much text on an iphone.
As for load range D. If the weight of the coach requires range E, you are probably overloaded. Having said that, I have Es on my coach. My next set will probably be Ds if they are available with decent date codes.
