Hi all,
I've found through the brochures, the first couple of years list the 455 with 212 hp @ 3400 rpm and 344 ft-lbs @ 2400.

I can't seem to see anything about the 403.

I'd appreciate any numbers and comments regarding how people feel the power and torque originally mentioned made the motorhome roll along, and if improvements have been made, what was done and what the results were?

I know a lot of people seem to have chosen to change final drive ratios...I believe for towing reasons more than anything?

Fuel mileage seems quite consistant...around 10 to 14mpg, has anyone made any dramatic improvements to this?

Any info or opinions would be fantastic.

Thanks everyone,

Gord

I drove one with a 3.07,,,dog. Mine has a 3.46. Nice with the 403. Better with a 507. I think Jims 3.55 would be best all around. If you were to tow some thing heavy,,,,3.73.,,,,PL

I had once gotten some info from Dick Paterson and passed it on to Billy Massey who posted it to his site. http://www.bdub.net/OldsEngineSpecs.pdf
Page 2 has the hp and torque figures.

Torque is a measured value. Horsepower is a computed value using the relationship between hp and torque. The peak torque occurs at a different RPM than the peak HP. More info on that is available in an article I wrote several years back which is posted on the GMCWS site: http://www.gmcws.org/techcenter/01-03tc32.html

Awesome - thanks very much Emery - great specs and a great article, and
Paul, thanks very much for the 'real life' opinions - nothing beats those!
:-)

I find it fascinating (according to those numbers), that overall the figures
generally dropped year after year - and fuel mileage as well. I guess the
403 although smaller was perhaps over-worked or unable to perform under the
majority of conditions and with the given gearing most efficiently? Lots to
learn and study.

Much appreciated - thanks again Gents!

Gord

Gordon, those of us with the 403 that are in good condition find that the
engine will consistently do a little better on fuel than the 455. Comparing
carb engines. The 403 develops it's maximum torque at a higher RPM than the
455 does, and doesen't like to pull much below 2000 RPM. The gearing changes
allow the 403 to run at a higher RPM range where it performs almost on a par
with the 455. A few tweaks in performance will pay large benefits with the
403 and the 455 as well. If you are really thirsty for more performance,
engine swaps to a 500 cubic inch Cadillac are possible using mostly Cad
Eldorado parts. No substitute for cubic inches or cubic dollars for that
matter. The neat thing about these GMCs is that there is no wrong way only
different ways. Boys & their toys, right<Grin>
