I just remembered an odd thing with the last fill up about 100 miles from
home.

I know the manual says I have 2 fuel tanks but the coach has never taken
more than 30 gallons and I always fill it on the slowest
setting.
Well at this fill up it took 42 gallons, more input for the mystery if this
helps anyone to help me solve it.

Do ALL GMC's of this type have 2 - 25 gallon fuel tanks, without
exception????

Thanks again,

Ray

All except the ones that POs have changed. I sent you a link to the manuals http://www.bdub.net/factory-manuals.html If you download the parts manual also you can see where everstuff is and how it goes together. Hope this helps...

I think that adds to the likliihood that your fuel system "burped"
through the vent cannister.

Ray, yes if they have not been altered from how thay left the factory, there
are two identical fuel tanks each with a capacity of approx 25 gallons. They
share a common fill manifold that is located on the same side of the coach
that the fuel filler door is located. In addition there is a selector valve
that the output goes to the mechanical fuel pump by a combination of rubber
and steel lines, the junctions of which can also leak. Each tank has a fuel
tank sender combined with a fuel and vent line on the top of the tank. The
"O" ring gasket on those sending units has been known to leak as well. Each
fuel line that comes from the tank sender should go to the selector valve.
The vent lines are connected together and go to the filler neck just below
the filler cap. Their purpose is to burp back a small amount of liquid fuel
to cancel the automatic fuel pump nozzle. They also have connections that
can loosen up and leak.
A quirk in the system is that fuel can and does readily transfer back and
forth, via the fill manifold, from the front tank to the rear and vise versa
when one travels uphill and downhill. Other than that, nothing to it.<Grin>

H, Ray.

Based upon the next-to-last sentence in the first
paragraph of your message below, I am now thinking
that it could be a very BAD idea to try to top off
the fuel tanks in a GMC!

Let the pump shut off and continue the trip. Figure
that at worst you have maybe 40 gallons aboard, and
get 8 mpg at worst and you can safely go at least
300 miles before you need to refuel.

My bladder will demand a "DE-fueling" stop LONG
before that!

Ray,

Yes, all GMC's have two 25 gallon fuel tanks; I have filled Double Trouble
with as much as 47 gallons!

There's any number of reasons you could be smelling gas when filling up but
to "bullet proof" your fuel supply system you might want to consider the
following:

1) Drop the tanks

2) Remove the sending units and clean / replace the strainers and
verify/bend the fuel pickup tube to get the most fuel out of the tank.

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1011

3) Inspect the tanks for rust and repair as required.

http://www.por15.com/Fuel-System-Restoration/products/12/

4) Replace all the rubber hoses with ethanol compatible hoses.

http://www.goodyearep.com/ProductListing.aspx?folderid=1036

http://tinyurl.com/4czv8wv

5) Inspect / replace the large steel fill tubes for rust and inspect /
replace the rubber fill tube connections:

a) in drivers side wheel well.
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/855

b) between main and aux tanks.
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/567

c) at rear tank inlet.
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/859

6) Replace the sending units o-ring on each tank.

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/916

7) Make sure the fill check valve in the drivers side rear wheel well is
operating properly.

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/792

8) Install an in-line filter with a steel housing between the outlet of the
steel line that is attached to the top of the front cross member and the
mechanical fuel pump inlet.

9) Run separate vent lines from each tank to the fuel filler neck, join them
in a "T" as close to the point where they attach to the filler neck. This
will help them vent easier and reduce the "burping" when you fill up.

10) Use stainless steel hose clamps at every connection.

11) Replace the Quadrajet fuel inlet filter.

If anyone can think of anything else GO FOR IT!

Rob M.

That is very good advice. Do you like the mod of using steel tube across the top of the tanks and adding an access port from the interior?
