My family (two kids, 6 and 9 & wife) will be traveling to Yellowstone from Michigan in our "new" GMC Canyon Lands this summer. We hope to arrive in Yellowstone on June 11th. We will be traveling with another RV'er who will be driving a 34 coach. I need suggestions on where to camp with a family. Swimming, playground, nice bathrooms are a necessity. We will not be towing a car so proximity to the attractions is a plus.
Thanks for all of your help

We stayed at Fishing Bridge Campground some years ago. Fished opening day in
yellowstone lake from the bank. Caught lots & had to release the big ones,
only could keep 2 per day under 20 inches, and had a hard time catching any
that small. Kids caught some too, had a great time. Also stayed at a
campground near old faithfull. Big crowds & commercial feel. Kinda liked the
back country campgrounds better. Long time ago, probably different now.

Jim,
I am not a fisherman and was wondering why you can't keep fish OVER 20
inches, I would have thought the opposite would be true.

Rob,
It gets worse than that; this is from the FL regulations for redfish:
"Slot limit of not less than 18" or more than 27"; no closed season; one
fish per person per day limit"
It's supposedly to maintain the stock of immature fish and the older, more
reproductive ones.

If you stay in the park there is only 1 campground with full hook up. There are 2 others I believe with a dump station. The one at the north entrance has no shade, and was only half full all week. We have an awning on both sides so we made our own shade. Often you can pick up a campsite first thing in the morning. It will be chilly in June. I do not recall seeing playgrounds or swimming pools in the park. Being without a car will be a disadvantage.
There may be campgrounds outside the park in West Yellowstone and perhaps a car rental there. There is also a open top limo that tours the park.
Be sure to warn the youngsters to stay on the boardwalks. A little boy broke through the crust and was scalded in boiling water.
We went raft riding and horse back riding (1/2 day events in Gardiner) to burn some energy off; then hiking the trails into the gorge. Be sure to stock up on groceries before entering the park, selection is limited and price is not. The hardware store in Gardiner is not open every day. W. Yellowstone has better shopping in my opinion.
Cell phone signal was very weak at best (2007)and mostly not at all.
Going in the East Entrance you will be pretty high up, a lot of road work was/is done.
Lastly riding in the co pilot seat is not for the faint of heart. Some of the roads are narrow and the co pilot has a sense of levitation. You want to be on top of your game because the other driver will be distracted looking at animals, scenery or trying to pass on the double yellow line.
If your front end wonders or your brakes are weak have them taken care of.
This advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Rob, the rangers told me that the over 20 inch fish are the mature ones that
reproduce and that there are fewer of them, so they want to protect their
brood stock. The smaller fish are either juveniles or stunted & not suitable
for reproduction.

Yea, take the Yellow bus tour, Very cool and well worth it!
they are old busses on modern frames. Watch the drivers use the transmission to navigate the hills and not the brakes.
Yellowstone is a lot of fun:D

Let me add my 2c worth about my favorite earthly place:
1. You need to do a lot of in park travel to enjoy to the visit as Yellowstone covers more than 2,000,000 acres of very rugged and varied topography ranging over 8K ft. It can(does) get cold at night.
2. It can get very crowed in season, 1 in-park campground will not yet be open and most will not take an RV over 30'. You will find centralized pay showers in each of the campground(but some distance from the campsites), very clean. No swimming pools or swing sets, don't expect to find Marriott amenities or even a McDonald's on the corner. The main lodge is very nice however if your stated needs are firm and are the minimum, staying in the park is not an option.
The best links are: http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm
and: http://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/
Plan your visit before you go, the place is just too big to go and wander.
This is not intended to frighten you, but to give some planning information so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Rick,
Your goig to be traveling at high altitude, so take my sugestion and
bump up the timing.
If you run by the book, you'll not like the performance.
Also the fuel delivery system needs to be addressed.
You might luck out and have no problem and laugh at me.
I have travelled in that ares many times.
There are several sites, but you'll need to make reservation ahead of
time as they fill up bfor 4:00pm.
