There are a multitude of ways to get off the GMCnet Email list. Reporting
GMCnet emails as "Spam" is not one of them. If you're having trouble
unsubscribing, please send an email to:
gmclist-owner@temp.gmcnet.org
That email address goes to both me and Billy. One of us will be happy to remove
you from the list.
Comcast has informed me that they are receiving multiple spam reports on our
server. Apparently the reports include the "GMCnet" subject prefix, so it seems
unlikely that this is actual spam. More likely it's a subscriber reporting list
traffic. If these reports continue, Comcast may restrict or terminate my
service. Either action would mean that I could no longer host the server here.
I have taken several other steps internally, but in the near future I will be
adding a "header" appended to the top of all GMCnet emails with unsubscribe
info. I will try to make this as unobtrusive as possible. I'd rather not add
it at all, but the "footer" URL apparently isn't working. A regular "reminder"
email with unsubscribe info is also a possibility.
Again, if you're having trouble unsubscribing, just let me know or email
gmclist-owner@temp.gmcnet.org. We'll take care of it for you quickly.

Patrick,
Is it possible that the people that are reporting GMCnet traffic as Spam
don't know that they're doing it?
What I mean is it possible to set an email program to capture messages from
gmclist@temp.gmcnet.org throw them in a "Spam" Folder and send a message
back to the server without their knowledge.
Does Comcast provide you with the email addresses that are reporting the
spam? If yes could you not just delete them from the GMCnet list?

Unfortunately, the person(s) reporting the mail as spam are (most likely) not reading ANY part of ANY of the messages.
Most likely this is from people that have signed up for the list (not knowing it wasn't for GMC trucks or something) and then found how much traffic it had. It is very likely their Spam filter has been turned on and they do not even see the emails.
I can understand a company trying to reduce Spam, but it may go so far as restrict wanted traffic.
This is a problem with any "push" technology and many "net surfers" are more used to "pull" technology... like the web based forum.
To keep the list from being cut off, maybe you'll have to have a round where everyone on the list will have to "OPT IN" and THEN restrict new subscribers to ones you KNOW want the emails. Drastic? yes. But do you want to keep the email list?

Last week I contacted my internet provider because it was putting
several gmclist emails in my Spam file. The emails that had gone
into my Spam folder were all the emails from three different people
for the last month. They were Mike Miller, Steve Southworth and
Ken Burton. AT&T could not find any reason for this to happen.
All three were in my address book and I had a rule set up that
any email containing [gmclist] in the subject line was to be good mail.
I went through my Spam folder and identified all of their emails as
not Spam and the problem has gone away. Some one answer that
problem. Why did this happen after years of it not happening and
why just these three guys?

Hi Charles,
Mail falling in to a spam folder is often caused by the message content, not
necessarily the subject or email address. There are so many considerations
(decisions in the algorithms) being made if say, you are using a client-side
program such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express or even an ISP's own
arrangement "server-side". My point: specific combinations of words can
throw the switch for a seemingly decent email to be rejected. ATT,
Bellsouth and a few other ATT domains (I can't remember them all), are bar
none, the worst for spam handling and IP blocking. Very difficult to
*impossible* for anyone who gets black-listed by ATT or Comcast to get back
on their good side. I am not familiar with ATT (and the other 'big boys')
server-side email handling more than to say...they seem to be lacking
terribly in many respects from the point of view of a legitimate sender.
My solution has simply been a Google Gmail account which once set-up,
performs flawlessly and can be accessed server side (through a browser) or
client side too. More space than anyone could ask for, and even a light an
somewhat humorous tone to their controls and your actions when using their
web interface - makes email just that much more fun. 5 stars and never any
repercussions to the sender (i.e. this mailing list), unless explicitly
stated as such by the receiver.
Best wishes,
Gord

Another twist to this. A list member was just removed due to "bouncing"
email. The bounce message indicated that his ISP was rejecting the email
due to:
"A URL (tinyurl.com) in the email resolved to a blacklisted IP: 521 The IP
195.66.135.139 is Blacklisted by zen.spamhaus.org."
So tinyurl is being used by spammers and spamhaus decided to blacklist it.
If you consider how many times an individual url gets requoted in a thread.
If ISPs are spam filtering based on spamhaus, this is an endless loop with
no end in sight.
Just lovely....

I use a program, and have for over 10 years, called MailWasher. It is put out by an outfit in New Zealand. I believe they have a freeware version. It intercepts ALL emails and holds them for your review before they get to your IP (mine is Comcast). At this point I can mark them as spam or as "friends". I can set up my own set of filters to filter out and delete any emails that are continual spam. Outfit is Fire Trust. Link is:

I am VERY happy with it and am running the Pro version.

Hi Jim,
It appears you're on a Yahoo.com account primarily, and if you're not using
a Comcast email addy even though they are your ISP, it shouldn't make any
difference - not saying MailWasher is not a good thing - I'm sure it is.
More, that if any email goes through (forwarded to) a Comcast post office
(their email servers), regardless of what you have said is acceptable, may
still not be acceptable by their standards. If you were forwarding to a
Comcast email addy, they would still (sadly) have complete access to the
email contents unless perhaps it was wrapped in zip files about 5 deep.
While I certainly understand ISP's need to "handle" email, it's really a
pity it's gotten to the point where criteria users stipulate will be
completely ignored by ISPs based on their own rules and regulations.
Gord ;-)

Gord,
Don't knock it till you try it and understand it. It works. I have five (5) email accounts and none are abused by spam getting past my filters. Try it. You just might like it.

It might be that there is too much useless chatter on the site. It seems
that no one bothers to reply to the sender only and that everyone feels that
they must say something. Quite a bit is useless like the grounhog thing,

It appears, at least from the following non-identified
sender, that perhaps the purpose of the list's fellowship
and friendship function is not according to his/her likes.
I personally see a DUAL (at least) purpose of furthering
group friendship AND technical knowledge. I am gaining
from BOTH of those functions, and unnecessary restrictions
to one or the other will certainly end up reducing the
TOTAL benefit of BOTH fraternal and technical resources.
Sure, some of the "chatter" is not particularly germane
to the maintenance, restoration, improvement, etc. of
our GMC motorhomes, but restriction to only technical
stuff would probably run off all but the techno-geeks
and that would be a GREAT loss to all.

William,
I must admit I don't recall having had the pleasure of making your
acquaintance as yet. I just checked your details on the GMC Forum and see
that you registered in August of last year and this is your sixth message.
You are what is referred to as a Newbie so I figger'd I'd take the time to
explain my perception of the GMC net to you. Simply put this site is like a
bunch of friends sitting around an old pot bellied stove in a Country
General Store. Someone brings up a subject or asks a question and we all
chip in our two cents worth. I disagree with your opinion as most times it
isn't useless chatter; however, I will admit that we do seem to take off in
all kinds of directions at times.
As far as replying to the sender only goes, that defeats the idea of this
site; we share the information with everyone as quite often someone other
than the person that sent in the question can use the information too! If we
replied to the sender only that information would not be disseminated.
Your comments are not new; every so often someone comes along and notes that
we ramble, some emails are hard to follow because there are multiple subject
that run parallel, or have nothing to do with GMC's and we should stop
wasting bandwidth. Quite a few of us have met each other at rallies, parked
in one another's driveways, have become friends and use this site to keep up
with each other.
Bottom line - that's the way it is and it ain't gonna change!

I will take my share of that blame for the Muskrat Ramble. It seemed like an
appropriate time to interject a little humor into my life. Mary, my wife is
back in OHSU Hospital facing another open heart surgery to repair what the
original surgeon screwed up. If I bored anyone with it, all I can say is
your turn in the barrel is coming.

for a second time. Hopefully the second time round will yield better
results.
We're all pulling for her!

Well MY solution would be to eliminate the mail list and just have the
forum, and then merge the photosite, forum, and other tech sites to one
location, but that's just me...
...ducks for cover

Would someone mind telling me, and other latecomers, what the genesis of this site and the photo site is?
Who is hosting it? How did it get on .mybirdfeeder.net ?
Is it possible to have more categories? Lots of forums have an off topic section for general discussions among friends.
thanks
