From Kim's earlier note, I don't guess there's any chance of me wienie-ing
out of my commitment to giving a seminar at Patterson. So, I'll start right
now begging for help: I put a Sanden clone compressor on the 455 a couple
of years ago, and moved it to the Cad500, so I'm not completely ignorant
about what I'm supposed to talk about (aside from what CRS has stolen). But
a lot more folks have done installations and may have comments I should
hear.

If you've installed a modern compressor, I'd sure appreciate hearing any
tips, suggestions, part numbers, model numbers, brand names, sources,
prices, etc. I'll meld all the information I can gather into something that
hopefully will enable others to do the upgrade with less floundering than we
did. What I'd REALLY like to hear is how to install the new compressor
using the GMC hoses, without alteration. I know Sanden makes a rear housing
that's compatible with the GM dual connector, but I don't know any specific
vehicle it's used on, nor do I know whether the GM hoses will work without
modification -- I suspect the shorter Sanden may make the hose routing a
problem.

HELP! Off-GMCNet, please.

Ken,
I think Steve F may have worked out some of the problems. Maybe contact him?

The sanden compressor was used in many Dodge Chrysler and plymouth and
Mitsubishi (dodge clone cars--think Colt) and were very small packaged
compressors. You can use the lines off the junk car and your GM lines
and use the fittings that fit on each end to make a new AC line to fit
your GM coach to the new compressor.

NAPA or a machine shop could make you a new line for the compressor to
the coach. Make sure your new lines are set up for 134a as its the new
freon.

Just some tips from me
S. WIlliams
GMCless for the moment

Sent to the GMCnet as others may find my humble suggestion helpful also. :)

Thanks, Sammy.

I'll try to remember to mention R134A in passing. But I'll be recommending
HC12A/Duracool since it's so much more efficient than either R12 or R134A.

HI ken

I had some major problems with my air system last year and ended up rebuilding the compressor manifold ( which I built from piping ). The compressor hose feeds into a filter/moisture remover, then into the manifold. The manifold has the pressure switch, a regulator, then a valve for the storage tank, connection to the GMC system then a valve that feeds a quick connect for air hose, in or out.

it is really simpler than it sounds. The compressor is behind the steering gear and the manifold is mounted next to it. The psi guage ( on the regulator ) is visible from the front grill and the vapor remover is in a clear bottle visible from the grill and a finger can press the schrader valve to drain it.

Most of the system is OEM or as I received it, I made few changes to it when I repaired the Compressor and made up the manifold.

It is easy to see the pressure from outside as is the moisture level in the clear bowl for draining.

Hope this is helpful....

Whoa now! I'm not proposing to use a Sanden for an air compressor -- just
as an air conditioning compressor! (Though I do have one for that purpose,
maybe, some day, perhaps.)

But thanks for the info anyway. :-)

Not trying to start a fight here, but I would suggest you not publicly advocate hydrocarbon based refrigerants.
I'm not arguing the merits, just saying that advocating a position contrary to Federal regulations may not be a good idea.

Hardie,

Unfortunately, illogically, and absurdly, you're probably right. But this
is not the place for a tirade about the misuse of government power so I'll
leave it at that. :-(

Ken,

It is interesting to note that the Australian Government requires that any
vehicle imported into Australia that has air conditioning has a system that
is open to the atmosphere. As I understand it you must have removed a hose
or component to prove that there is absolutely no gas of any kind in the
system.

Furthermore there is a company here called HyChill that actively markets
hydrocarbon based A/C gas:

http://www.hychill.com.au/

If you click on the link above you will note on the right side of the page
there are links that change under HyChill News. The links lead you to a risk
assessment studies.

Guess the Australian Government is smarter than the American Government;
probably because being upside down causes the blood to flow to their heads
rather than their feet! ;-)

Steve,

Don't kid yourself, there's lots of pollies here that leave public service
get fat paying jobs with private companies.

The most recent that comes to mind is Bob Carr, Premier (Governor) of New
South Wales. He pushed through the Cross City Tunnel (allows you to go under
the Sydney CBD to get to the Eastern Suburbs. The tunnel was financed by
Macquarie Bank. When he left office (before the tunnel was finished) guess
who he went to work for as a "consultant."

The funny bit is that the tunnel went belly up! The numbers predicted that
would use it never materialized. Yes, Bob still has his job!
