G'day,

Harbor Freight has their 3/4" drive socket sets on sale for $39.99!

http://tinyurl.com/6c9chgx

http://www.harborfreight.com/21-piece-sae-3-4-quarter-inch-industrial-qualit
y-socket-set-40996.html?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=0511
b

Disregard the price of $49.99 the coupon IS $39.99!

I have printed the coupon to a pdf file and can send it to anyone that wants
it.

If you want both sets you'll have to print out two copies and keep in mind
that HF will only allow you to use one coupon per visit. When I was told
that I turned to the guy behind me in line and asked him if he would buy the
second "whatsit" for me. He said sure so I handed him the second coupon and
the cash in full view and earshot of the checkout girl. She didn't say a
thing and just processed the sale for him.

Regards,
Rob M.

Make sure you read the fine print on those HF coupons since they all state the quantity limit  of that  particular item  you can purchase. In the case of the 3/4" socket sets the limit is 5 sets with the same coupon. I live just a couple of blocks from one of their stores and know from experience that not all of their employees are aware.

That's crazy. I just spent the same price for a single 17M OE/CE wrench with the word 'Snapon' on it. One wrench. No wonder America can't compete. I wonder if they are like white metal though and crack under pressure.

John,

The HF sockets are much lower quality than the Snap On, however, for the
number of times you're going to use this set it probably will serve you
well.

I have had a SAE and METRIC set for over ten years and haven't had a
problem.

HOWEVER, John Sharpe had one of his crack but all he had to do is take it
back to the store for a FOC replacement.

I was there when it cracked but can't remember what happened.

No John, they are some kind of iron (sinks, rust and is magnet), but that is about all of the good news. If you need a cheap socket of wrench to get into someplace tight, you will be second-on-line (SOL) for the last good tool.

In years of doing things I probably could have avoided, I have discovered that cheap tools work for things that don't matter. If, however, you need a thin wall socket, a thin head wrench or a special drive (hex, Torx or triple square) you will be way ahead to buy the expensive tool where they actually pay attention to the metallurgy and heat treatment. I just always consider what it will cost if the thing I need to get apart gets damaged by the cheap tool.

Yes, I have three 3/4 drive sockets that each cost what the CCV set cost.

Without getting into too many tool snob discussions, I was able to E-Bay through 2 purchases slightly more than a whole set of 3/4" sockets of mostly Craftsman, and Proto's, for not too much money. (Still not Snap-On's though). Without wishing doom, you have to consider the collateral damage when one of the lesser brand sockets or ratchets explodes in your hand. So far, the Craftsman ones survived 2 motorhomes worth of jumping on the end of a 5' long pipe bought special to get those darn front axle nuts off though. And, I'm fat, so I'd hate to thing of what the foot pounds is there.

If one 'subscribes' to the Harbor Freight presence, one will get frequent
and numerous coupons and reminders of their being.

I think just doing it on their website will suffice OR perhaps more
effectively, fill out one of the numerous post card forms in their stores.
One can expect a monthly or more frequent email notice of sales and a
frequent 10 page color mailer rife with coupons via snail mail
.
Some of their stuff may break in your hands but they offer a free
replacement. Buyer beware, as always.

I bought the 3/4" socket set that you folks are talking about & have used it twice. Once was to remove the CV axle nut and the 2nd to remove a wheel when the 3/4" impact at the tire shop broke before I got there. The big guy there used the t-handle with a 4 foot cheater bar to loosen the lug nuts & it didn't bend the bar or break the socket. Must've got a test set because they've worked as advertised. Maybe it was because I didn't have a coupon & paid full price.
I will admit that the 12v impact is a bit wimpy, but it helps in a pinch & I don't plan on tightening things super tight. If you need tools to keep in the coach to use until someone "borrows" them, they get the job done. I leave the Snap-on tools locked up at home...
