Folks,

I want to thank everyone of you for the support, help and information you provided me during the last few days. If it wasn't for you all, this trip could have been a big disaster.

So, let's pick things up where I left off in the previous message. If you remember, I found out the hard way that some dealers are more concerned with getting product out the door than making sure things are safe. I am sure that not all dealers operate that way. I also found out what happens when you overfill the gas tank (thanks Glyn). THAT lesson probably cost me enough money in wasted gas to buy lunch.

SUNDAY

So, after filling the tank and the tires I headed out to St. Louis to spend some quality time with my son at school. I made it just fine only to discover that he wasn't there! He didn't expect me so early so he went out with some friends. That wasn't a problem, as I needed to work ( I have to pay for this GMC somehow), so I logged on and began working. My son eventually shows up and we have a great time catching up. Well, after spending all of 2 hours with my son, Ken Burton calls my cell and informs me that I had better get moving as a great big nasty winter storm is on its' way. THIS is why we decided on the GMC. Ken doesn't know me from Adam and yet was concerned enough to contact the Merrells and make sure I was safe. Many many thanks Ken. If it wasn't for that call, I would be stuck somewhere eating more fast food.

So, at about 9:30pm I head out from St. Louis hoping to get as close to Blaine and Diane's as I can. It is amazing how the fear of getting caught in an ice storm in an unknown used RV can keep you awake enough to keep driving until 1:00 am! I finally stopped in Marshal, Indiana, about 1 hour from Blaine and parked outside a Burger King.

MONDAY

So, have you ever woken up at 6:00 am after a late night, gone to a fast food restaurant and had trouble deciding what to eat because everything looked so darn good? Yeah, me neither.

I had the pancakes as the thought of all the other greasy stuff just made me queasy. At this I am working on very little sleep, extra doses of adrenalin from the previous days excitements and the fear of a winter storm. Oh yeah, and I hadn't showered since Thursday. The coach had already been winterized, so the only water I had was in whatever restaurant I stopped at. I was obviously looking and feeling my best!

So on to Diane and Blaine's. What can I say. They were extremely hospitable, informative, and they even let me shower! We put the coach on the lift and the two of them walked me through all the things I needed to know and all the things I should have seen before purchasing. Had I 'seen' what needed to be done, I might have forgone the purchase. But I didn't and have a slightly longer list of things I need to do.

We looked at the play (slop) in my steering and compared it to his 1976. The amount of play was similar with mine being a bit more. This brings up a question that I will ask under a separate post as I am sure no one is reading this far in. The question concerns the condition of the steering box. When these coaches were new, was there still this much play in the steering or was the steering tight and has just loosened up over the years and we are just 'used' to it? If it was tight when new, then we should be able to reach that point again.

Well, Diane brought up weather.com and showed me that the projected storm followed my exact path home. So, into the coach I go and head out. I decide to bypass Hampton's place in Columbus and keep heading home.

I hit the mountains in Pennsylvania / West Virginia before the weather got bad It started out slowly but got worse as it got darker. At this point, I am driving in the dark, it's raining, and the trucks are still barreling past as I am doing 35-40 mph. I think I am just going to have to have 'WUSS' put on my license plate. So, I am white knuckling it again. As I continue on, the the stove cover starts rattling, the Microwave has now shifted so that it is rubbing against the counter making a squeaking noise. It was a cacophony of noise that was slowly driving me crazy and I didn't dare stop on the mountain road to fix it. As I was trying to keep the RV on the road, I had a running commentary going in my head about what I was going to write today. Trust me it was good stuff...I just can't remember what it was!

Finally things got so bad that even the truckers were pulling over, so I pulled into a McD's in Frostburg, Md for the night. This was about 1:00 am. I awoke at 5:30 am to the sound of someone in the parking lot scraping ice off their windshield. So, while still dark, I headed home.

I finally got home at 9:30 am today exhausted and hungry but safe and sound thanks to you all.

Thank you.

Well you made it home in front of the storm. That is what I was hoping for. I totally expected that you would hunker down inside of Blaine's Florida room for a few days and work on your coach.

I talked to Blaine yesterday around 4 or 4:30 in the afternoon and he said you had left for home. It was just starting the freezing rain then. So you had a 4 hour head start on it.

About the steering box if that is what your problem is. Almost all of them can be adjusted to tighten them up. There is a good writeup on the GMC Eastern states web site on how to do it.

If you are not up to doing it yourself you can go buy a "rebuilt" one which really means you bought someone else's old one with new seals and hope the rebuilder adjusted it for you.

If you do go buy a "rebuilt" one be careful to get the correct one. Please read the Eastern States write-up so you can be sure to understand how to get the correct one.

Several people have had difficulties with NAPA rebuilts. There is a good rebuilder somewhere in Michigan. Someone else here will have to give you their name. I have never gone the rebuilt route. I just adjusted my own so my experience on "rebuilts" is nil.

I hope you and Blaine checked all of the other stuff like ride height, tie rod ends, and idler arm before blaming the box itself.

HTH

Good Luck.

Actually Ken,

We didn't really get a chance to do anything in-depth. We gave it a good look underneath and introduced me to issues to be looked at.

Although, if he asked, I would probably be happy to drive back!

I can not get over how handy access to a lift like that would be. It would speed maintenance tasks up unbelievably.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a lift with that capacity!

As far as how they drove back when they were new..... they drove pretty darn good. No slop or kinks in the steering. Wheel felt much like a luxury Eldo or Toro of the day. Pretty light for a 10K+ pound vehicle. I do remember the torque steer issues from the very begining if you lost any traction either side up front, it would want to lurch to the side, but that's FWD. My band had a 76 EII back in 77 so I'm calling that new as we were the second owners. I remember going to GMC MH dealer in St.Charles IL for service beyound the fluid changes I did, and seeing them all sitting there inside and out.

We held a work rally at Blaine's late last fall. I spent a week down there and we worked on many coaches both on the lift and off of it. Maybe we'll hold another one there again some day.

At the Hamilton Ohio work rally we have the use of a drive over pit that will handle up to 3 GMC's at the same time. Hamilton is usually held in the late spring sometime.

Then there is always the Bean Station work rally which is held by the DixieLanders on Kentucky Derby weekend. There will be around 80 coaches there and we have the use of Al's pit. There are lots of very experienced GMCers there that will assist you on your GMC project. A few come to work on their coach but many like me just show up to enjoy the week end and help others.

The theory behind all of these work rallys is self help. You come to work on your own coach, bring the necessary parts and the rest of us will pitch in and help. If you are expecting someone else to do the job for you then a work rally is not what you want.

Decide what you need to do and what facilities you need. We probably can find you a place to work on your own coach.

Ken,

Damn! I have flights booked so I can attend the GMCMI Convention and the
Bean Station Rally. I figger'd I could attend the Bean Station rally and sit
back and watch other guys fix stuff on Double Trouble! ;-)

Actually I'm coming to get some help with the electrical systems, I have a
reasonable grasp on how they work but want to understand them fully as
that's my Achillies heel!

I will be more than happy to do greasy dirty filthy work in exchange for
help on the nice clean electrics!

Robert,

Whew!!! What a trip! You'll have stories to tell for a long time. If you join a local club you can provide the campfire entertainment for several rallies. I'm happy to see that you got home safely.

Ken B. is an amazing guy who is pretty much willing to go out of his way to help anybody at any time. There are lots of other guys on this forum just like him. You chose the right motor home, for sure. Good luck with it.

That comment wasn't directed to you. It was more to re-enforce the tone of these work rallies. They are a lot of fun with goup cookouts etc.

Rob, bring you electrical problems and we will try to figure them out. Since you have a coach outfitted by someone other that GMC, you might want to chase down the house wiring diagrams ahead of time. It would be helpful.

Ken, don't be so modest. You kept with him and helped him a great deal even
if it was virtually oriented. It still helped.

I'm sure he felt a lot better after getting a shower at Blaine and Diane's.

Ken,

Thanks!

Actually my desire is to remove the dash cover and perhaps the dash
instrument panel and clean up the wiring behind there as well as the wiring
under the front hoods. Even if I can't get that done I'd like to learn where
they all go and label them so that afterwards I can trouble shoot electrical
problems better. Eventually what I will do is disconnect each and every
connection, clean it, lube it with dielectric grease and reconnect it; that
way they will be as good as they can get!

I'd like to raise the standard of wiring up towards Ken H's!

Below is a link to the Avion Operators Manual on Bdub's website; if you go
to the 120 VAC and 12vdc wiring diagrams you'll see they're even simple
enough for someone electrically challenged to understand!

Bob Burkitt has a neat wire marker tool. It writes on shrink tubing. I borrowed it when I rewired my coach after my engine fire. You write the label and slide it over the wire before shrinking it.

Ken H. is a different story. If you look at Ken's coach EVERYTHING is labeled.

And if you look at my coach after Ken has been under the hood with the trouble light and label maker, you'd think those labels came on there. We are about 1/3 through labeling and testing, but he (Ken H.) knows his stuff. Now, on to the transmission rebuild!

Ken,

I beg to differ here. I think it is because you CAN remember working on poorly identified stuff.

When doing anything for a client, everything gets labeled and everything gets done like I am going to have to work on it next in the dark during a storm.

Yes, I am well aware that I am paranoid, but I find it has served me well.
