Special RV drivers license [message #113530] |

The January issue of FICA's publication lists Motorhome regulations by state. Most states listed require something other than a regular operators license. Many states, including Ohio, are listed as needing a class D license.
What is a class D license and do we really need something other than a regular license to legally drive our GMC's?

A Class D License is a regular driver license and is required to operate a passenger vehicle.

I could not find anything there except apocryphal
reference to Class D/E licenses that MIGHT be
needed for driving RVs.
My GMC is only about 4' longer than my Ford F-250!

OK thanks Ken. From Wikipedia I learned:
Passenger Car: Covers most passenger vehicles, including cars, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, vans, and all except for the largest recreational vehicles but does not include motorcycles. Different jurisdictions have different designations for this license type: a majority of states call it Class D, a few combine the Class C (Non Commercial) and Class D license together as Class C, in Florida and Louisiana it is designated as Class E, in Mississippi it is known as Class R, in Missouri Class F, in Rhode Island Class 10 and in Hawaii it is Class 4.
Apparently this is not something I need to worry about.

They finally standardized CDLs a few years back and 'reversed' the lettering system so A is the biggest semi truck. Here is the cut and paste:
Classes of License:
The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:
Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.
Class C -- Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material that has been designated as hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and is required to be placarded under subpart F of 49 CFR Part 172 or is transporting any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR Part 73.
Endorsements and Restrictions:
Drivers who operate special types of CMVs also need to pass additional tests to obtain any of the following endorsements on their CDL:
T - Double/Triple Trailers (Knowledge test only)
P - Passenger (Knowledge and Skills Tests)
N - Tank Vehicle (Knowledge Test only)
H - Hazardous Materials (Knowledge Test and TSA Threat Assessment)
X - Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials
S - School Bus (Knowledge and Skills Tests)

So.... I think with a TZE a regular car classification is fine as it is under 26,000 lbs, am I correct? I have a class B w air brakes so I'm fine anyway.

States that require a special license for motor homes usually specify above a certain size, usually 40'. Even a stretched GMC won't make that. At least I wouldn't think so.
