There are about 15 places on a GMC that need a little bit of light.
these are not the high power reading lights that are being sold at
Quartzsite,
but little bits of light needed all over the GMC.

Read here, this is a modification of a Dollar Tree 1 $ Puck Light

http://goo.gl/IV2Qu

3 led, puck lights, that are modified to:

run on 12 volts, at 20 ma, (0.020 amps)
plastic case and lens
built-in switch
removable mount
no batteries
last forever (LED)
can be water-proofed

Have to warn you, this is how to modify a $1 puck light to work on 12 volts
and requires dis-assembly, and soldering , ( but it is cheap;>)

I will be showing the lights and how to do the modifications at the GMC NOR
CAL work rally.

Gene,

Great inexpensive mod. I have one of those Sylvania pucks that was given
out as a freebie somewhere about 6-7 years ago. Works great when getting up
in the middle of the night and you don't want to disturb someone. I think
I'll give the your mod a shot.

Sent from the Dollar Tree...

yah, the batteries was what always stopped me from using the Pucks.

If the Sylvania is a dimmer one, it will be hard to convert since the pc
board has an integrated circuit on it. For $1 I have just gone to Dollar
Tree lights, not worth the time ;>)

Gene,

Not going to mod the Sylvania one - I use that in the bedroom at home. I'll
pick up the $1 ones today. Have you seen the LED lights with the magnetic
switch at the Dollar stores? One small light with a magnetic switch. Mount
the two pieces anywhere. When they separate the light goes on. Again, not
very bright - but who would have thought 20 years ago the technology would
exist - for $1. Batteries included!

Now I have to dig for the 100 ohmers.

Thanks,

Tom

I have a few of those, but I stayed with the batteries rather than going to the work of wiring. They have been in for 2 years so far and were still working great.

I found a similar looking Phillips unit that has a motion sensor. I mounted it to the ceiling of the bath. It comes on whenever you are in the bath. Its bright enough for those middle of the night trips. Also let you see the latch after you've turned out the lights to leave.

That would be a $15 item except for one huge thing.

I like it Gene. Thanks. I must have 10 of these. Have often thought about going into a Dollar Tree and buying everyone they had and putting them on ebay for 3 bux a pop.

Gene:  Do you get your creativity from your wife or your mother?  I have a less redundant question and a comment.

Question:  What happens if the voltage goes to 16 or more volts as sometimes happens with a bad alternator or a bad ground on the motor charging side of the alternator?

Can the LEDs handle the extra .6 to 1.3 volts each?  I am the sort that sometimes leaves stuff on when I drive off and the puck lights would often get about 14.2 volts from solar charging or 15 volts if I equalize.

Comment:  A couple of years ago I had two of those 9-LED cheap flashlights go bad. I spent too much time holding them in my mouth to work on stuff and they did not like the saliva that leaked into the switch.  I disassembled them and cut the front light board and cut the front of the light off so I could solder wires instead of the batteries.  I then wired them up to run on 12 volts and tested several resistors in the line.  I still have them but do not use them due to not having a switch or housing.

Your puck mod is clearly a more elegant solution (than came from my saliva).

Great write-up and mod.

came across another option:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=ACCENTS&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2Fulite.htm

the "ULITE-x3" is $4 and already set up for 12v wired in application. Not as creative, but the work is done. Have to consider shipping costs as well though, so not the deal that the $1 dollar tree special is. Still, for all the other projects to do, the simplicity of this makes it worthwhile. Lists as being waterproof, so good for engine bay etc.

Assuming 0.7v dropped by the LED, and assuming the pucks are simple LED's rather than SMD's, and assuming they're set up for nominal 20ma at 12v, they'd have a 565 ohm resistor. If the voltage goes up to 16v, then you'd have 27ma through them, and all that I've seen have a max of 30ma, so back-of-the-envelope I'd feel safe with them.
If there are 3 LED's in the puck each with 0.7v drop, then the resistor is a little smaller, but you still only get 28ma at 16v.

But hey, at a buck apiece, you're not out much even if they fry...

is not a problem with the puck lights, because, white LEDs drop about 3 to 4
volts each, as shown here

http://goo.gl/FglSU

and the 100 ohm resistor drops about 2 volts at 12 volt input (20 ma)
and
drops about 4 volts at 15 volts (40 ma)

so the 100 ohm resistor I put in protects the LEDs.

Too late for me to spend the big bucks on the $4 pucks.  I bought four for a buck and dug my soldering iron out of the GMC.  Also, near the pucks in the pucks for a buck store  was a packet of speaker wire - 40 feet for a buck. Now I have a place to apply my solder.

I think I have some 100 ohm resistors.  If not, I can use a couple of 50 ohm or a couple of 200 ohm resistors right?  Also, I assume we can use a small 100 ohm resistor and will not need to use a big one.  If my 50 ohm resistors are bigger than my 100 ohm resistors, that would rule them out.  Say What?  No watt!  OhmY what fun we can have with Ohm's law!

On our way to Qsite, I stopped at a couple of Dollar Tree Stores and
picked up about 15 of these pucks. Also went to a Radio Shack and
picked up resistors, solder, and a soldering iron. I wanted to make up
some of these so I could use these instead of the 3 incandescent
lights that I normally have on while watching the TV. I used these
pucks with the 3 AAA batteries, and found that they put out more than
enough light while watching the TV (I wound up only using one of
them), and also more than enough light to light up the keyboard on the
laptop while on the net at night. Since then I've started making the
GeneF mods and have started replacing some (but not all) of the
incandescent lights, and will put some where I really need a small
amount of light at night. I don't have any fluorescent lights, so
these are working great for me.

I have two of them, Jay. They work well as floor lights in our GMC.
Ours are amber, the white ones put out more light, but not enough to
comfortably read by. Great night lights, though.
