As I am going to be taking a few days to bring my coach home, I am going to need to be working in the evenings to help keep the money coming in to pay for it!
Are there coach friendly locations or store chains with free wifi available? I assume that Walmart and CrackerBarrel aren't offering it.

I know Starbucks has wifi and they are located about every ten feet or so! I think they recently stopped charging $$ for it too.

Besides the site that Gary W mentioned, virtually all Mc Donalds have free wi fi now.

Not to be a pessimist but even if you find some WiFi (Panera is my favorite)
then the possibility of getting a 26-foot GMC close enough for a descent
signal becomes another issue.
One time, however, I did park at a library after closing. No one in the
parking lot but me. The signal was strong and the performance very good.
Places that have free WiFi will also have lots of users unless you're there
during some downtime.
Verizon now has a pay-as-you-go plan. Virgin Mobile, which is what we use
most, has a pay-as-you-go plan which uses Sprint for the backhaul. For us it
sure beats the search for reliable WiFi that can be unpredictable since it's
"free". Now, having said that, some times it's slow, too. Too many teenagers
on the phone hogging bandwidth at certain points of the day and in some
locations.
Walmart used to put their cash registers and inventory scanners on an open
wireless that wasn't connected to the internet. No good for browsing but
great for capturing credit card information if you know how to interpret all
the bits and bytes flying through the air.

i use Macdonalds Wifi from the parking lot all the time.
It's a little temperamental, and not entirely intuitive. After your wifi finds the signal and tries to connect you need to open a new window to get the MacDonads Start page and you have to agree to the terms and conditions. And it likes internet explorer, for that step, better than Firefox or Crome.
It's hit or miss from one MacD to the next, they all claim to have it but i don't think anyone in the place cares one way or the other. The urban stores might see a lot of traffic but the highway stores don't make it a priority.
It shows up as "attwifi"
Also, big cheap hotels are pretty generous and they use a powerful signal, you can pull off ona big hotel exit and usually find a free signal.
good luck

True. But what a GMCer doesn't know won't hurt him. Or, will it.
At Montgomery, TX I gave a little talk about security on public networks. I
mentioned that a big danger was having sharing turned on. I then
demonstrated how I could find an unsuspecting soul, log on to their systems
and them move (or delete) files at will. Of the dozen or so computers I saw
on the network, at least 60% were wide open with no password set. I could
have done some damage. Someone that didn't care would have.
I'll allow my iPhone to get on open WiFi but not my computer. I feel I have
too much stuff on my computer to put at risk.

Byron,
I have the Verizon "pay as you go plan."
For those of you that are interested (dollar amounts are approximate):
1) NO contract
2) Must have a Verizon USB 760 modem
a. Buy from Verizon for around $250
b. Buy off eBay or elsewhere for less
3) Visit Verizon CORPORATE store with your laptop/notebook
4) Select the plan you want; I did a 5 GB/month for $60/month
5) Pay activation fee of $50
6) Let them plug in the USB 760 and get you on line
7) Used the service from June to December
8) I "Suspended" service when I left in December. Charge $15
a. Suspension is good for three months
b. Suspension can be renewed once
9) If you need to suspend for longer than six months you have to disconnect
The connection is fast and reliable. I got signal everyplace we visited last
year no problem.

Rob M.

Rob,
Virgin Mobile beats that plan. No connect or disconnect or suspension.
I got the Virgin Mobile version of the 760 for $99. For Verizon I bought one
on eBay.
We look at where we'll be for the next 30 days and pay for who will provide
the best coverage. I really only used Verizon when we went to Illinois for
GMCMI. That was old General Telephone area and is still well entrenched.
Personally, it's a great way to go. We also have a Cradlepoint PHS 300 I
like. It'll take 4G or whatever USB dongles when they come out.
Now, when you go out west there will be places where you'll get nothing. So
far, you've not been that direction.

Byron,
Damn! NOW you tell me! ;-)
I'm confused! (Yeah, I know so what else is new!)
I selected Verizon because their coverage map is better than all the rest.
Are you saying that there's NO coverage out west at all or just no Verizon?
Are you saying that Virgin Mobile has better coverage than Verizon?

Rob,
I'm saying that there are places out west where there is no coverage from
anybody. But, you won't want to overnight there anyway, right? Too many
mountains and too much open space. You gotta have people to make money or
else make them buy satellite service. Satellite service should be no problem
with you and the NASA discount. Right? Or did they forget to grant you one?
Sometimes retirement has no privileges except the advantage of aging.
Coverage is coverage. Marketing hype is marketing hype. Look very closely at
the maps and make some judgment call as to speeds to expect. Verizon does
have good coverage. Of course, Sherwin-Williams covers the earth.
Now, if you have an antenna that can pick up a line-of-sight signal 50 miles
away (curvature of the earth and all) then you just might get a mobile
broadband connection. Of course, that would be on a mighty tall mast.
Confused? Don't be. Hit the delete key.
