I am getting ready to button up the back of my GMC. I have seen a few
ideas for beds on line. Does anyone have any great ideas for a rear
bed with storage? I also was considering getting rid of the cabinets
at the head and feet to fit a larger mattress. Does anyone know what
the largest bed you can fit back there if those cabinets are removed?
Thanks for any ideas.

The largest mattress that you can get in the back with the cabinets in is a full size and the biggest that you can get in with them out is a full size. Best to leave them in unless you are into having a custom mattress made. By the way there are 4 GMC's at Rincon Country West RV park for the winter.

I have one like that. Good under bed storage.
But I just put in a Queen size air mattress, not a double.
But my coach has a lot of custom cabinetry and the bathroom may have been moved...

John,
My coach is a standard rear-bed Eleganza II and I made head and foot boards instead of any cabinets at the head and foot of the bed - just narrow shelves on top for clock, etc. The new length is 83" which is 3" longer than a queen. The width is still full-size. I bought the really thick - 5 inches I think - mattress pad from JC Penny in queen size and cut it to full width. The extra 3 inches gives room to help make the bed - much more comfortable than it was.

As an alternative to removing both cabinets (we really like the 'blanket chest' and use it to store lots of stuff) I removed the 4 - 5 inch wide panel at the foot of the bed in order to get more room for my feet to hang off the end of the mattress (actually cut it down) as seen here:

That mod and a new three stage foam mattress (from Overstock.com) made the bed much more comfortable and we are sleeping much better in it since eliminating that panel.

As noted, it is on top of the gen and propane compartments, so it is relatively low. As with all the interior mods he made, he did a great job.

My PO built in a full sized bed. My opinion, ^&#%&*^%$#%&^%%^
That said, BE very careful about the size of the platform. THE PO built right up to the wall on the street side. FIRST, you have to remove the mattress to pull the thing up for access, second, the platform scrapes the curved wall and window screens.
Access to the water pump is a pain, try to make a trap door to access without lifting the bed platform. Might be a real good Idea to make a trap door to access under the platform where the floor is in the rear half and put in a couple of drawer in the front half, or a door cabinet, your choice.
Personally, I want to go back to the OEM fold down seats in the back. I really hate that bed platform he built, you just can't access anything without taking the thing apart.
But Iam sure you will be very careful of the walls and size of the platform so you won't see the problems my PO caused.
REMEMBER, you need to access the water system to winterize frequently so make it easily accessible.
Some of us are putting in a hatch in the water tank for inspection and cleaning the inside. If you do this, you need a hatch over the water tank as well.

I built a platform for our rear bed.
Using 3" X 1" fir with red oak on the leading edge.
The plywood is 3/4 "
Then I installed a linear actuator with a 14" stroke to lift the platform
and mattress.
The actuator where 24 volt works just fine with 12 volts.
I paid only $40.00 each for the actuators.
That gave us a little more storage under the bed and its easy to get to
water system.
The actuator lifts the bed in less then one minuet.

Larry has a good point that should be hi-lighted.
Remember that the coach walls curve inward.
A full length, wall to wall bed will not lift up.
Also, a spring mattress is a pain to get in and out of the rear.
I use a $100 air mattress with a built in pump and a mattress topper. Way better than a spring mattress.

An air mattress or 4" memory foam mattress topper has worked for us. When
we had our second "blowout" with the very comfortable air mattress and
Walmart didn't have a full size for our replacement, we thought we'd try to
memory foam topper. Bob is the one who has back problems, but he has never
complained about either the air mattress or the memory foam. Either is very
easy to remove. Price on either is much better than any other option.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this, John. I'm dry camping in Quartzsite and had a little glitch with my internet tether.
The under-bed area between the generator compartment and the propane/water tank compartment is available for storage. We just have chairs, and miscellaneous items kind of unceremoniously stuffed under there. I intend to make some sort of slide-out drawer or box for that area at some point but it is very low on my list of priorities at this point.
If you and your wife would like to make a little trip up to the Pinal County Fairgrounds this weekend, to the Saguaro Jetset bluegrass festival rally, you can see it, and several other coaches in person. We will be there from Thursday afternoon until Sunday Morning. Saturday would be a good day to come up there.
