Well today I did a little test of the onan, I hooked it up to an outboard fuel tank which I then filled with exactly 3 gallons of fuel. I then fired the beast up and went inside, turned on a 42 inch TV and Playstation, water heater, and ran the onan for 5 hours while I played Assassins Creed brotherhood. I would guess this is approximately 1/4 to 1/3rd load. When I shut off the onan I was surprised to find a decent amount of fuel still left in the outboard tank, so using a large pyrex measuring cup, I measured the remaining fuel, there was 1 gallon and 16 ounces left! So that means the onan ran for 5 hours on 1 7/8 gallons of fuel! Not bad for a 37 year old powerplant...

Someone came up with the figure of .8 gallons per hour at full load. I have no idea of that figure is accurate or even realistic. I am just throwing it out there for you to think about in your consumption calculations.

For what its worth:

According to the Onan literature,(see link below) fuel consumption is as follows:
4kw "average fuel consumption" is 0.88gph

6kw "at load" is 1.3gph

Well it might seem I have bested those expectations. Though my onan isn't stock, running a pertronix with 27* total timing, so that is considerably more than stock, I opened the plug gap and used a hotter plug as well as leaned the mix to just where it runs super smooth. all in all I am quite satisfied, granted its not one of those hyper efficent inverter gens which will run 12 hours on a gallon of gas, but for the size and age of the unit, still impressive! Also I have the 6kw unit.

Shan, it's the AC's, esp if you use 2 in high heat and or humidity like we
s'westerners do, that puts the full load on the Onan -not your regular
household items.

Bob, that I understand, this test was mostly a 1/4 load test. I did turn on the water heater which the new one I have pulls 1.5kw so that was also on for the duration of this test but depending on the heat cycling was probably for an hour only....

Hi All

The Onan manual is here
http://www.bdub.net/manuals/Onan/TechBulletins.pdf

Page 47 of the document shows the 6.0NH burns 1.05 gal/hour at rated load.

Dave

Some time ago I posted the following,

I tried using the Onan and the roof air instead of the Dash air, after 2 trips totally 1700 miles, I found that the difference in MPG dropped from 8.9 with the dash air to 6.8 with the Onan and roof air.
It may well be that my Onan is not set up right but it sure starts and runs nicely.

Duce, give it a try with just the a/c on, one of them if you have 2. Thats the only time we ever use our Onan, running the a/c down the road on a real hot day.
