Hey All;
There is a couple broke down in Redding, CA. They have a 78
Eleganza-II that is having fuel problems according to some mechanic
that they found. This GMC is their house now cause they have fallen on
hard times. They bought this from a relative's estate in San Jose, CA.
(for $1) and were driving it to Redding, but it stopped before they
could get it to the RV Park where they are going to stay. Is there
anyone close by that can help them? They have a mechanic that told
them it needed a fuel pump, so they sent away for one. I told them
about an electric pump and where to install it. They went and got one
and have installed it, but they are having problems getting fuel to
the carb. I met them while spending the night at an RV park in
Redding, but we're now in Manteca, CA on our way to Quartzsite, and
our phone calls aren't enough. He needs someone there to help him (for
instance they didn't even know their coach was front wheel drive until
I told them). Anyone close by that could help them? Didn't see anyone
on the Blacklist. Anyone? Email me if you can and I will pass their

Gary,
If the fuel lines are old and not ethanol friendly it wouldn't take much to
clog the carb filter. I reckon he should check it again. If it is clogged
with black gunk he's got his answer.
I suspect it is more likely for rust residue to clog the canister filter
down by the fuel selector as it is probably finer than the strainers in the
tanks.
It would make sense to put a canister filter in between the solid line that
attaches to the top of the front cross member and the inlet of the
mechanical fuel pump.
Didn't someone come up with the idea of removing the fuel line from the
inlet of the fuel pump and pressurizing the line to the tank with an air gun
to clear the blockage or blow the socks off?
He could buy a two gallon fuel can and hook it up to the inlet of the fuel
pump and drive it to the park after verifying that the carb filter isn't
blocked.
Demonstrating an acute grasp on the obvious; he needs to drop the tanks,
clean them, replace the socks, and replace all the rubber lines.
If he does get to the park will they permit him to work on it there?

Yep, he says he replaced both the carb filter and the little
cannister filter down by the selector valve. I'm thinking it might be
clogged socks in the fuel tanks. The park won't let him tow it there
cause it has to be movable in case the river rises and floods out the
park (next to the Sacramento river).

I'm going to recommend an very old school method, if compressed air isnt available, it might get you a mouth full of gasoline so have some mouthwash handy, take off the fuel line ahead of the pump and blow back through it, there should be nominal resistance, have someone actuate the selector switch, when my selector stuck it would starve the engine of fuel. blowing back though the line will also dislodge any particles that might be stuck some where. Gasoline doesnt really taste all that bad, but it does leave a kind of gross texture in your mouth, so I recommend a high alcohol content mouthwash to remove the residue. Oh also makesure you dont swallow any...

One way around the tank for now, a gas can, a valve to put on the lower side with a hose fitting, and hose the gas the fuel pump.
The gas can could be put in front of the battery. 2 1/2 gal would make it mobile for a few miles, if the fuel pump is bad then the can be in the pass floor and hosed to the carb.
Sat. would be the earliest I can go. Working stiff.

When I brought my '77 home I had "lots" of problems with rust in the tanks and lines.
I ended up with a outboard boat gas tank sitting in front of the passenger seat. (In fact, it is still there.) Gas line runs out the window and in the front hatch, to an electric pump mounted on the body support near the (non-functional) mechanical fuel pump.
The 6 gallon tank looks something like this:
