I'm headed out on Thurs to pick up a new-to-me GMC. Hopefully I'll have new wheels and tires for the 400 miles home. Got insurance and the Black List. What else should I have with me? How many have roadside assistance? Considering Coachnet.

DEFINITELY have roadside assistance. I have had Allstate's RV
Roadhelp for 12+ years and been very happy. They've towed the GMC 3
times (the first before I made it home with the purchase), and made
other service calls on other vehicles. Covers whatever you or other
members of your family are driving. Cost about $99 per year -- maybe
less for the first year.

Fantastic--bet you are excited! I use Allstate Motor Club (the RV policy) since they have a generous towing policy. I've never had to use it so far. I also have AAA since I got it for next to nothing plus it gives me a discount at Napa.

The only thing that has ever sidelined me was an electronic ignition module. Of course I try to replace failure prone items (belts, hoses, etc) at home before they have a chance to fail. Make sure you check all the fluid levels at your first opportunity. It would not be a bad idea to have a fuel filter for your carburetor with you as well. In fact I would change it before you start driving and carry a spare.

If you get Road Service, make sure it will have taken effect before you want to bring the GMC home. When I bought mine, I got the insurance and Road Service on it two days before I went to pick it up. AAA told me the Road Service wouldn't kick in until after 36 hours.

Pete,

It would help if you could provide a bit more details about the GMC you're
going to pickup:

Where is it, it might be near a GMCer that can help you prep it?

What route are you going to be taking? That would give a heads up to Black
listers that you're going to be passing through.

You note you're hoping to have new tires, that leads me to believe it may
have been sitting for awhile, what's it's general state of repair?

Er, well what does the seller claim to be it's general state of repair! ;-)

Have you looked over these documents:

Yes, I guess I haven't made a formal introduction. I live in Hayden, ID (near Lake Coeur d' Alene) and am a RN by trade.

I've wanted a GMC since I was a kid and now am about to fulfill that desire! I've been lurking around here for a month or so, and have been asking very rookie questions of the brain trust here on the net. I wouldn't even consider a 35 year old motorhome if it weren't for the enthusiastic support the GMC receives.

Some of you may know Larry Calhoun of the Cascaders club. He has been gracious enough to show me around his motorhome and fuel my obsession! Looking forward to meeting the other owners in our area.

The 76 Glenbrook I'm buying is owned by DJ Eberhart in Sheridan, OR. He owns a GMC service facility and I have heard from several sources that his reputation is solid. He has owned the GMC for many years and has done extensive work on the drivetrain. The rest is in need of some cosmetic upgrades, but I'm looking forward to doing that with our own personal touch. Plus the price is right!

I'll be traveling along I-90 and I-84 along the Columbia river basin. Hopefully the weather holds. Big snow storm to pass through here before I take off, but to be followed milder temps and rain. Kinda picked a rotten time of year for motorhome shopping!

Great Pete. The best thing you can do is take Larry C. with you. He is one heck of a nice guy and a very good friend to me.

Pete,

You're not alone in having wanted one since you were much younger. 30+ years
is a long time to wait but, hey, it takes a while to get to the place where
you can reward yourself. At least, those of us in the former middle class
feel that way.

RN -- great. I should have gone that route. I worked in a hospital when I
was in college. Back then there were things known as orderlies. The night
nurse and I oversaw the ER. Good experience in that I could help when on
duty. When I went home I couldn't take work with me.

What to take with you. Be sure you have some emergency triangles. Most
people are smart enough to have them and will leave them in the coach.
Coach-Net, I hear, is good. I had a friend that signed up when broken down.
He just called them again the other day. I have AAA with RV added. I
upgraded when I needed a tow for about 300 yards. It was up hill. But, above
all, have some type of roadside assistance. Only real fools own a GMC and do
without.

Since you're getting the coach from someone reputable you shouldn't have a
big problem.

Pete,

Considering what you've noted below the Aussie saying of "No worries, Mate,
she'll be right!" appears to apply as far as the vehicle goes.

You have received great advice from the other respondents.

Pete,

Congratulations!

Cell phone, cell phone charger, basic hand tools, short list of names to call (alert them in advance if possible). Have JimK's number at Applied GMC since he would be a good knowledge resource as well as emergency parts supplier.

Most anything generic is available on the road -- assuming you are close enough to a Napa, Autozone or such or a Walmart.

Drive about 20 miles, stop, do a walk around, feel the wheels and tires, then again after another 5o miles do the same. Then just do a similar walk around at any future fuel/convenience stops. This type routine always helps calm my nerves and is helpful in determining any unusual issues.

Take some pictures so you can give us all the "first drive home story".

I am too far away to be of direct help -- but will eagerly await your arrival home report.

Good luck,
Dennis

Pete,

I met DJ in Las Vegas at the GMCWS Rally a few months back. You have a leg up on most of us, buying the coach from a respected GMC shop owner. You should have NO worries! I'm sure DJ will have it in reliable condition for you. Depending on how much recent use the coach has had, I would still change the Carb. fuel filter and carry an extra one with you. The new blended fuels can shake a lot of "stuff" loose from your fuel system on the fuel's way to the Carb. If you experience any vapor lock like symptoms, that is the first place to look. If the coach has seen regular use, that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for all the advice!
I did sign up for Coachnet and feel it was money well spent for peace of mind if nothing else.

I will also round up some spare fuel filters. I'm towing my Jeep home, so I'll have a handy "parts runner" if needed too.

Worst case, I'll be pulling over and camping sooner than anticipated! Don't mind a little adventure, but mostly hoping for a uneventful trip!

Pete,

Aha! You just told us something you hadn't before!

You're going to be towing your Jeep.

Is the GMC / your Jeep set up with towd brakes? That is when you apply the
brakes in the GMC will the brakes in the Jeep come on?

If it is not setup to do so you night be braking (Ha Ha) the law!

Check the following link:

http://www.readybrake.com/state_laws.html

Also does your RV and or Jeep insurance cover it or anything you might
damage while towing or if the Jeep busts loose!

Hi Pete!

We just did an epic drive bringing home our first GMC - 2400 miles, South Carolina to Southern California over the holidays. I also always wanted one ever since seeing them in the late 70s when camping in our family's Travco motorhome. It is geat to finally have one in the driveway.

Ours is a fixer upper cosmetically and in some of the basic RV systems, but mechanically is great with engine, brakes, and air bags freshened, new, or rebuilt.

Make sure windshield wipers are new. I brought Rain X but didn't use it. It's nice if the windshield washer pump works, too. The PO installed a plastic fuel filter in line due to concerns about possible junk in the gas tank and that proved to be the only issue I had. I had a handful of extra filters, which was handy. It was no big deal at all - I replaced one when the engine quit because the filter was clogged with rust shaken loose in the gas tank, and after that event I replaced them two more times along the way as insurance (usually in a Wal Mart parking lot after morning coffee....)

I also added a few quarts of oil, though I'm not sure that my dipstick's calibrated correctly and need to figure that out. Everything else I brought along as insurance went unused (tools, fluids, Ragusa air bag replacement rods, jack hook, etc), which was nice.

I have AAA RV roadside assist as well as the roadside assist from my insurance provider, Progressive. Two hundred miles of towing between the two of them oughta do it, I think

I put the Black List on my iPod and was happy not to have bothered any of the fine people there.

Have a great trip!

John

John,

You just revealed one of our secrets -- Rain X.

When I put that on before a trip I hardly use wipers except under continuous
and heavier rain. Otherwise, it's easier to see by just letting the rain
bead up and roll off. On a long trip (more than ten days) I take the bottle
with me to refresh the windshield.
