My neighbor has a 1977 Kinsley.
He asked me to check the timing before we go to Casa Grande rally.
It had a definite miss, so I pulled the plugs.
# 5 was fouled with oil deposit with 0 compression.
Ran a compression test & all cylinders were good except # 5.
Put air in cylinder to see if it was valves or piston.
No air at carb. or exhaust manifold but lots of air from oil pan.
Definitely a piston.
His health is not the best so he does not want to stick thousands into an
engine rebuild.
I said I would get on line & see if anybody has a working 403 that we could
put in.
We are in southwestern AZ.
Waiting to hear from anyone.

Do you think the rings lined up? If he has the facilities to do an engine swap, would he also have the ability to pull a head and piston and see how bad it is before swapping it out?

We thought about that but the engine has 192 thousand miles on it.
If we got that far and the cylinder wall was damaged we would have to pull
the engine anyway.
Plus a valve job and so on and so on.
The swap would be done at my shop as we would be dropping it out the bottom.

Other than the oil pan I don't think the GMC 403 was different from passenger car versions. You should be able to find one locally with no problem. You may want to read this and also click on the heads and cam section. The 403 did not use a low intake like 455's did.

Thanks so much Bob for the info.
Heard from Paul Leavitt on the one he has.
Asking price is very reasonable so going to check on freight from MO.
Will also check to see what's available locally.

Jim,

Bob has a good point. Since you are almost the same distance from Tucson or Phoenix, you can probably find a 403 at a salvage yard a lot closer than MO. or FL. Problem is, you wouldn't have any idea of the history and would be at the mercy of the salvage yard operator. If you like, I can have my mechanic friend check his sources in Tucson for one.

See you in Casa Grande!

Other than the oil pan I don't think the GMC 403 was different from passenger car versions. You should be able to find one locally with no problem. You may want to read this and also click on the heads and cam section. The 403 did not use a low intake like 455's did.

Here is a quick look of what is on Craigslist close to you:

Jim,

Here's a 455 in Tucson. It looks like it may have come out of a Toronado

Carl;
Not knowing the history of the engine from a salvage yard is my only issue.
I trust Paul to tell me the history of his engine and would pay the freight
from Mo.
knowing I have a good engine thus doing the job only once.
If you trust your mechanic friend, I don't have a problem with him checking.
Let me know.

Jim,

I trust my mechanic buddy, but I'm not sure even he could provide any kind of history on a junk yard engine. I suspect he would be at the mercy of his sources just as you and I would. I will call him and see what he has to say, but you might be better off just getting Paul L's engine shipped.

Jim,

List it on uShip, the Caddy 500 crate and three other boxes wound up costing
me around $500. I listed it for 10 days and by the 6th the price had dropped
from $1500 to $500!
