OK, well, maybe I need a tutorial in searching. When I search birdfeeder for "hydronic" I get 2 hits, one about expansion tanks, the other with a link to the Rowe FMCA article, which was nice, but nothing about actual installations in a GMC, which is what I would love to see. Searching the web for "hydronic" gets 10 hits, but they're all for home systems, and while good background, not very relevant to a GMC.

It's an exciting concept, and since my furnace is currently broken and needs to be fixed and/or replaced, now's a good time for me to be looking at options. JR mentioned, "I know of several GMC in our club which use
heated liquid (typically not water, but a antifreeze fluid) in the floor
to heat their coaches and it works very well." Are there any details or pix of those installations available? Or even contact name/email if they're not on the list so I could start a conversation?

Thanks,

J

Yep ER, checked those sites several times. Not much there. Several deal with diesel fueled units, several are no longer there. None are about folks who have successfully installed and lived with one.

Jay, Check these out:

http://www.espar.com/html/applications/rv.html This is a general site for Espar. I'm sure they make propane fired as well.

Buskirk put a Primus hydronic system in our stretch that he built for himself shortly before he died. It is a great system. Just imagine warm floors in a GMC in the winter! The system heats with propane, electricity and waste engine heat. It will also heat domestic water if desired.

Do you have to do anything special about insulating the floor under the floor heater to avoid losing heat out the bottom?

Hal, any pix? Is this a stand alone system or does it draw hot water from the engine? If stand alone, who made it.

Thanks, Glenn

Jay,
There is no info on the unit at all. Have looked it over and over.
This particular unit came from a people mover. So if anyone has a
people mover or knows of one, they are located under the passenger
side seats with the vents visible. There are two or three units.
It's just a simple heat exchanger with a 12 volt fan.

Here is my concern with these discussions on hydroponic heat. The hydroponic part in only the method of distribution and does not increase the amount of heat available. It may in some case reduce the amount of heat available. The idea of heating the floors works well except you need to account for the downward heat loss through the floor that would not be there if the air was heated directly. This loss does not make much difference if the heat source is the engine which has lots of heat to waste or if you are using a 30,000 BTU furnace (boiler).

If on the other hand you are trying to do this using electric I see a major problem. Most 110 volt heaters are probably limited to 4000 to 5000 BTU. Even with two of these installed your capacity will only be 8,000 to 10,000 BTUs and you will be near the electrical capacity of a 30 amp coach. With this limited amount of heat available (1/6 to 1/3) you do not have much extra to waste.

All that said, I do carry and use 2 cube heaters. I use them, usually at the 1/2 power (750 watt) setting, when I have "free electricity" available. It is cheaper than using my propane furnace. If it gets too cold, the propane furnace comes on automatically to make up the difference. Actually my furnace was broken and I got by for a couple of years. Diane fixed it for me at the fall work rally at their house. I'm happy to have it back.

Hi Roger,
Thanks. "People mover"? Not familiar with the phrase, other than the horizontal escalators at airports??? Wiki says there's a British Parry system - that it?

Glenn,

My system was made by Primus. Unfortunatly they are out of business. Marc has the same system except his uses diesel instead of propane like mine. Primary heat source is propane. Secondary is two electric elements that can be selected either one or two. Last but not least is a heat exchanger that transfers waste engine heat into the system if the engine is running. Nice when running down the road.

We have a very well insulated coach and it has been comfortable in the 20's with just the electric elements. There is a loop of pipe with several radiators around the perimeter of the living area. Two of the radiators have small fans to blow heat out from under cabinets. There is a separate loop to the electric water heater so it doesn't have to be on to have hot domestic water. Circulation for the entire system is by a small 12 volt pump

Marc has posted pictures of the small boiler in his photo album. I'll try for some pictures the next time any of the circulation system is exposed.

Gene,

Yes I have. The systhem is LP powered, although installed in a Diesel
powered coach.
It works very well. Kept the coach nice and comfy this winter when it
was -12 C ( 14 F)
It is a Primus heater built in 1982 and produces about 5 kW (17.000 Btu)
Primus does no longer produce these units, Alde is it's successor.
http://www.alde.co.uk/itemdetails.php?itemId=1
Don't get exited about it being a 230 V unit, this is easely solved with a
small step up converter
http://www.dvdoverseas.com/store/index.html?loadfile=catalog91_0.html
The radiant heat from the convectors is very comfortable.

I put a Aux AC unit under the couch. It also has a heat exchanger that I plan on hooking up to the engine for more heat while under way.

But I do have two roof units with 1500 watts of heat and a working propane furnace.

So I don't think I'll freeze Wink
