The first paragraph below is part of a communication I
had with Steve Ferguson right after I received the tie
rod end samples he sent me.

>5:30 PM I just received the rod ends.
>If one of these is suppose to be bad, I not sure I have found it.
>The one you wire brushed has a little bitsy snap when you try
>to move it. Is that the bad? That little snap? If it is I don't see
>how this could give/cause any steering play. It appears to me
>as though it only rotates in the ball. I don't feel any lateral
>movement. What am I missing?"
Charles

After sending the above post and before Steve replied
I continued to play with the tie rod Steve had said was
bad. Finally getting it in what Steve refers to as the
neutral position I did find side play between the tapered
shaft and the rod. That little bitsy snap is it. When I was
in what Steve calls the "neutral" position, there was no
movement of the 1/2 round piece the tapered shaft sits
in. All the movement was in the shaft to arm relationship.
Although the movement in this tie rod end is very slight
I can see where it and a bunch of others in the same
condition could cause steering problems. Man this is
getting tough. Yes, seven places like that would add up.
I would have though this tie rod end ok if neutral position
hadn't been pointed out to me. The side play in Steve's
sample feels minute but it does have lateral error. The
neutral position has a lot of merit. Feeling and seeing
this error confirms Steve's statement that in order to
properly check tie rod play you need to have one end
loose. I doubt I would have found this error just moving
the steering wheel.
Charles

Good afternoon from El Paso, Texas
The day I left El Paso for my Alaska trip I had just put brand new tires on
my coach. On the freeway it felt like I was driving a whale as she would
wonder all over the road. Called Jim bounds explained problem and He told
me just to blow up the darn things to the proper pressure. Blew tires up to
80 lbs the whale disapeared. Jim said with the rag wall tires they needed
to be good and hard.
Good luck
Marcel

Charles,

As Rob would say, "Good on you, Mate."

Thanks for the clarification and refining the point.

Sometimes you just got to be there. In this case, you have to have it in
your own hands for the "ah ha" moment to kick in.

Byron
