I have been looking at buying a project PB and like my previous PB, I want to upgrade to Alcoas, or, if not Alcoas, some other nice looking wheel and 16" tars (we in the Ozarks say "tars"). In putting the numbers together on this particular rig, I called my previous supplier and they informed me that the Alcoa Classic 160231 is "obsoleted" and no alternative is available from them. I know there has been considerable discussion on wheels on this net but can someone give me the nickel tour on wheels? As for the tars, I remember going with Goodyears on my old PB, like a G159 IIRC. What is the tar of choice now? What is a good budget for "tars"? Thanks.

You're not the only one that calls the "tars" ha ha. However, stay away from Goodyear 159's! Do a google on those.

Get some Dunlop radial rover RVxt tires, I paid $121 each. Check my thread about driving through ice and snow, it will give you an idea of their capabilities...

Two real options: American Eagle and Alcoa. Eagles are cast and machines,
Alcoas are forged. The Eagles come in a cheaper version that centers the
wheel using mag-wheel sleeve nuts, and a more expensive version that is made
for us with hub centering. There is no performance difference between these
two, but the hub-centered wheel is easier to install. Alcoas are more
expensive. Can't tell the difference between any of them from 10 feet away.
Jim K is your source for all.

As for tars, I have had reasonable luck buying whatever my tar guy could
find for cheap. If I put big miles on the coach, I might consider something
fancier, but these days I really don't think it matters what brand you buy.
In all cases, though, I recommend ragwall tars (as opposed to "all-steel"
tars that have steel sidewalls), inflated to the manufacturer's
recommendation, which for my lightweight 230 is 65 in the front and about 45
in the rear. This contradicts the advice from One Formerly Famous Source,
who recommended all-steel tars with 80 psi inflation--a sure recipe for
rattling out your fillings.

My "Heritage" tars mounted on Eagle wheels cost about $2000 three years ago,
for all seven.

Yep, and look like Alcoas. Jim can fix you up when the time comes. Maybe you can come down to La. for the convention and save on shipping.

Dunno what happened below, one second the message was there, I hit a key and
it was gone!

The "tyre of choice now" is:

Ragwall
Steelwall

The brand of choice is:

Michelin
Kumho
Bridgestone
Goodyear
Goodrich
Firestone
Nexen

Tread pattern of choice is:
HT
AT

Bottom line: The "tyre of choice now" is whatever the tyre anyone has on
their coach! ;-)

Larry,

Based primarily on glowing reviews here, I had 6 BFG 225R16 Commercial
TA's installed last month. $995 mounted but not balanced.

Not balanced because I provided 6 each 4 ounce bags of Counteract
balancing beads, which I strongly recommend -- though not necessarily
better than Equal or other similar balancing beads.

I am with Ken on the top ones being the BFGoodrich Com. TA. I like them but they may be the most expensive, not sure. Don't scimp on GMC tires if you can help it.
I just installed my second set of Nexan tires on the Vibe. Got very good mileage from the old ones so I went with them again. Did not realize they made them for the coach.
