Would you believe, I still have the carcass in the back yard.
I was about to call a wrecker several times but then I'd get an email from someone asking about yet another part.
Many of those efforts fell through.
So there it sits, i can pay a tow truck top haul it 50 miles to the nearest recycling facility, or, i may persuade a local person to strip it down for the metal.
If i go that route then I can save the end caps for whoever might need them. (that I could hide in my yard indefinitely)
So, the key this decision is knowing the approximate weight of the metal.

Dave,
I'm probably wrong but I could have sworn that someone mentioned that metal
recyclers weren't interested in the aluminum because of all the foam
insulation?

That is generally true but this is a depressed farming community.
There is no shortage of guys with a farmers work ethic who will cut that aluminum out and strip it clean for a few bucks.
If it only returns minimum wage I believe I can find someone willing to do it.
I just need to know the payoff.

I'm also interested as I have a transmode that, most likely someday, will take this same path. Knowing the AL weight would be a good bit to know.

It is surprising, given the incredible amount of information (all of it vitally important) this group has on the GMC, that no one has ever needed to know the weight of the aluminium.
Does anyone want to offer a SWAG?
The price for dirty aluminum is $.47 at my local recycle place so if there's 1000 lb then i could probably find someone willing to spend a weekend cutting and stripping.
But if it's only 4 or 500 lb then I'll probably just pay to have it hauled.

Hi
.06 inch aluminum weighs about .85 pounds per square foot. I would guess
the skins are about 20 feet long. The roof is the largest piece at about 8
or 9 feet X 20 feet ( about 150 pounds). I would think the side skins would
be less than that because of the window openings. I don't have any data on
the thickness if the interior frame members but I would guess they do not
weigh more than the skins. If the floor beams are aluminum they would be
quite heavy.
I would guess the aluminum in the body would be under 600 pounds . Have no
idea about the floor beams.
The door, if you still have it, is probably worth more as a GMC part than
scrap.
Good luck

Dave,
Think about it this way: I am 6' 1" tall and weigh 255 lbs (yes I'm
overweight)!
I reckon that that the 20' long aluminum body would weigh more than twice
what I weigh would it not? I reckon your swag of 1000 lbs is more like it
and probably that's low too.
I do think you're being optimistic when you note "i could probably find
someone willing to spend a weekend cutting and stripping." I don't think
that one person could strip the foam out AND cut the body up in a weekend. I
would suggest you mark off a couple of square feet and time how long it
takes to get the foam off to a level that the recycle place will accept.

Rob M.

I understand that the insulation is quite flammable. If the recyclers do not want the skin due to the insulation stuck to it, couldn't it be removed by a "controlled burn" ??? (After separation from the Fiberglass parts of course.)

Mike,
I too remember reading that the insulation was extremely flammable.
Did (or didn't) someone also mention that when it burned it gave off
phosgene gas?

Robert,
Beside the toxic fumes, would enough heat be generated to melt the skin adhesive, or maybe melt the skin itself.
Would it be a reenactment of the Hindenburgh?

Adrien,
First of all I would like to note that I only "heard" that the foam would
burn very quickly and produce phosgene gas, I have not taken the time to
verify that. If I wanted to burn it out it would behoove me to do so lest I;
or anyone I employed; be injured or killed burning it out.
I have stripped a couple of patches inside The Blue Streak manually and it
is a PITA job!
IIRC the skin adhesive is 3M-2216 and once again I don't know if it would
melt if the foam were burned off.
Nah, I don't think a GMC would go up as quick as the Hindenburg did down in
Lakehurst! For the hell of it I Googled "Hindenburg" and found the Wikipedia
entry which is very interesting.

Mike,
Once again I have no idea whether or not the burning foam really gives off
phosgene and if it does I have no idea what the level of phosgene it gives
off is. For all I know burning a patch a yard square might contaminate an
area large enough to encompass the area the person doing the burning might
be standing.
I do know that when I took some of the foam I stripped off the area behind
the fridge of The Blue Streak, laid it on the ground outside the workshop
and tried to ignite them. I couldn't get it to light. I reported this to the
GMCnet and was advised to try it with the foam vertical with the ignition
source at the bottom. I was assured that if I did it would light and burn
rapidly. I did not try it as the only vertical sections were still on the
walls inside! ;-)
To me the bottom line for me is that if someone were to be injured by
burning foam off a coach that I was scrapping I would feel responsible. If
the person that was injured felt that way too I could open myself to
litigation. Before I allowed them to burn it off I would be 110% sure that
burning it was not dangerous to life or limb.

Rob M.

On other forums i participate in people get really testy when you stray off topic.
I love how this group has no such constraints. It's a lot more like a bunch of guys in a bar, just letting the conversation go where it will.
I live in a fairly remote area, my neighbors burn trash in barrels all the time and occasionally you get a whiff of something very inorganic.
This weekend I'll do a test piece, remove and burn, and see what the results are.
I would never let someone else burn the stuff off for me.
