[GMCnet] MORE REACTION ARM TAKL [message #110435]

I went to our yearly auto show here in San Diego today. When I was
walking through the BMW section, I noticed they had one
futuristically looking BMW Motorcycle on display so I decided to take
a look at the suspension systems. The rear suspension looked like a
smaller version of the GMC mid axle with a single arm supporting the
rear wheel from one side. And guess what; it had a separate
parallel arm to react the torque forces from braking and acceleration
back to the main frame, similar to the GMC version except the
reaction arm was on the top side. Their suspension arm was much more
complex then our GMC's as it had a drive shaft hidden inside the
suspension arm. Now, if we could get one of the Jims to copy that we
could have a six-wheel drive GMC.

I also noticed most of the larger vehicle with disc brakes on the
back seemed to have a small drum inside the disc for parking brake
similar to what MB has had for many years. Who is going to make one
for our GMCs with rear wheel disc brakes?

My '05 GMC Safari/Astro has that rear disc brake with a drum parking brake inside. Seems like it would be easy to swap?

Someone with more money than sense! ;-)

Actually I reckon it would be a hell of a lot easier to come up with a
mechanical caliper that clamps to the disk.

At DuQuoin Al Branscombe had a Kelsey Hayes (I think) brake caliper out of a
Lincoln (I think) that has a ball bearing mechanism to actuate the pads in a
similar way that the ones Eldorado's used.

Here's a picture of the rear disc brakes on a 1960 Lotus with a manual disc park brake. These arrangements are quite common in most four wheel disc sports cars. The brakes in this picture are Girlings and the park brake appears to be a fairly simple bolt-on to the caliper.

Regarding the BMW, the extra arm that runs in conjunction with the drive shaft housing wheel attachment is a reaction arm, but it is reacting to the torque/rotation of the drive shaft. This goes quite far back in the engineering of BMW motorcycles. As far as six wheel drive, I have been thinking more along the line of electric motor wheels with solar powered and engine powered battery storage and regenative braking.

I was referring to modern cars. You can never truly get away from drum brakes. Most of those cited are older sports cars, or not in the mainstream.

I think the best setup for a GMC would be to add disks to the forward rear bogie and leave the rearward one as Drums, however, my coach bone stock stops surprisingly well...

Even more torque loads on the boogie arms. It doesn't matter if the torque comes from braking or acceleration, you'll get similar results... just opposite directions. IE: Under acceleration the mid wheels will "unload" just like the rear wheels do when braking.

Good reason to include reaction arms in any "6 wheel drive" system that doesn't replace the boogies.

Re separate calipers for the E brake. Look through the rear wheels of an Audi R8 road car. Not just old sports cars use a separate caliper. Yeah, I know Audi parts ain't cheap.

Jess,
The problem is not finding a parking brake. Big problem is finding one
that can hold on on a slope. Lot of the standard ones have a rough
time doing that.

Yes, in fact the one in the picture doesn't do all that good at holding back a 1400 lb car on a slope! I only posted the picture to show an example of how others have addressed the issue of disk brakes with a park brake. I'm thinking a nice set of wheel chocks might be the simplest answer, as long as you have a crewmember to pull them when you're ready to taxi:))
