Any of you fellas know how a car battery charger works? The one ive used for years just stopped. it hums, but no power gets to the leads and the needle just barely bounces when i plug it in to power, but no reaction when i connect the leads to the battery.
anyone have any ideas? guess ill get a new one, but this has my curiosity up.

Donovan,
I am electrically challenged and have no idea how it works.
I just bought a Schumacher Battery Charger from Wal-Mart based on Arthur
Brown's (Lindale, TX) recommendation. He noted that it has a setting that
would recover sulfated batteries that worked.

They have more powerful versions if you're willing to invest more. I do not
know if they have the sulfate recovery feature.

Donovan,
Without knowing a lot more than has been written, there is not a lot to say.
Your battery charger probably has about 6 parts, but the four that matter in this case are:
The transformer (the part that hums and makes something like 12V out of the line 120)
The rectifier that makes the something like 12V into DC for the battery.
The meter that is of dubious value, but it does wiggle so you think it is doing something.
and finally,
A protection device like a self-resetting circuit breaker so it does not catch fire.
It you touch the clips together and get no spark, any of the above may have failed. I have also seen the leads fail where they are attached to the alligator clips - old age and a lot of flexing will do that.

now knowing the parts, my guess is the rectifier went bad. the last time i used it, it seemed like it was on a pulse setting, which doesnt exist. the needle jumped up and down like it thought it was supposed to, but the hum never changed... guess its junk.. i got my $20 out of it.. haha
