I kept waiting for someone to publish the MSDS data on WD-40, but I didn't see
it. So I looked it up - their published MSDS says it is 45% "aliphatic
hydrocarbon", whatever that is (fish oil??). Then comes 25% "petroleum
hydrocarbons" and finally 2% "proprietary surfactant." Is that silicone? All I
know is that I've heard over and over again that any trace of WD-40 will cause
trouble with paint and bonding of most anything. I kept it out of the shop when
building an epoxy-bonded airplane. And that's all I know :-)

What is in WD-40? There is no fish oil (Urban legend) or silicone in
the formulation as it is an all petroleum hydrocarbon based product.
In the gun community it is never used to clean guns as it can cause an
automatic pistol to jam as told to me by several of my shooting
friends. The MSDS sheet does not list all the ingredients. The best
penetrating oil set up is the homemade mix of 50/50 of ATF and Acetone
as was discussed here on the net a few month back.

Formulation
WD-40's formula is a trade secret. The product is not patented in
order to avoid completely disclosing its ingredients.[2]WD-40's main
ingredients, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information,
are:
• 50%: Stoddard solvent (i.e., mineral spirits – primarily hexane,
somewhat similar to kerosene)
• 25%: Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon
dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
• 15+%: Mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
• 10-%: Inert ingredients
The German version of the mandatory EU safety sheet lists the
following safety-relevant ingredients:
• 60-80%: Heavy Naphtha (petroleum product), hydrogen treated
• 1-5%: Carbon dioxide
It further lists flammability and effects to the human skin when
repeatedly exposed to WD-40 as risks when using WD-40. Nitrile rubber
gloves and safety glasses should be used. Water is unsuitable for
extinguishing burning WD-40.
There is a popular urban legend that the key ingredient in WD-40 is
fish oil.[3] However, the WD-40 web site states that it is a petroleum
based product [4]

Never had a problem with W-D 40 here and we have painted four cars and one
truck here at our home.
My brothers boat yard paints upper end yachts and they also have W-D 40 on
site.
I'll have to ask his painters if W-D 40 is causing a problem.
They also do a lot of fiber glass repair on yachts and Navy RIB's.
