Netters;
Who is running with out the spare tire on your GMC and why are you not or why are you?
I'm thinking of removing ours.
To me it just a big chunk of you know what hanging on the back of our coach.
If I have a flat or blowout.
I can call for road service.
I can't remember the last time I had a tire problem.
May I'm a Lucky Duck!
Happy New Year
Thank You

Howard,
Tire problems and mechanical breakdowns rarely occur at convenient times or places.
I hit a piece of metal on I-5 at 10:30 p.m. Flatted one nearly new rear tire.
I was near Santa Nella (semi remote area).
AAA was there within 1/2 hour and we got my spare mounted. Continued on to Santa Nella and spent the night and next morning had to drive 80 miles to Fresno to the nearest Discount Tire to have the bad tire replaced under warranty.
That's the only tire problem I've had in nine years and nearly 80,000 miles in the GMC.
Had I not had a spare it would have been a lot more trouble and expense to continue my trip
I see no downside to carrying a spare.

I considered going without the spare, then I had a flat. Tore a chunk out of the sidewall, no way it was going to be patched. Can't imagine AAA getting me a new tire, mounting it, then putting it on. They'd have towed me to a repair shop and who wants to go through that. Changing the tire was a whole lot easier than road service. And, by the way, no way my quadrabag setup was going to let me drive anywhere.
I put on my spare and was on the way in about 30 minutes, not half a day.

Or Quartzite. I would like to see that. I just Added a spar carrier and a spare. I cannot get my Quadra bag as high As I could get the old bags, and at 85psi, seems a bit stiff too.

G'day,
The question in my mind is not with the strength of the QB it's the safety
of putting extra load on the remaining tire that is well above and beyond
the tires rating.
Here's a scenario for you. A GMC'er with a Royale (reportedly heavier than
other GMC's) suffers a blow out of his D Load range tire on the passenger
side rearmost tire.
He's one of those paranoid guys (like me) who carry all kinds of tools and
spares.
His wife treats their GMC like a home away from home and carries every
cooking utensil / implement / pot / pan imaginable along with souvenirs from
every trip they ever made. Too boot she's a dedicated follower of fashion
and carries and forty seven changes of clothes.
Who knows just how heavy this GMC is?
They're on a highly crowned road out in the middle of nowhere in Utah at
night during a rainstorm in late October.
He's a penurious bugger and likes to squeeze a nickel until the buffalo
bellows and his tires have great tread on them so why change them even if
they ARE 8 years old!
At any rate he gets the GMC stopped, goes out and quickly shuts off the air
to the rear bag (its' rainin' like a fat cow pissin' on a flat rock). He
gets back in and raises the air pressure on the passenger side front bag.
Along with it being cold, damp, and raining; like most of us old farts he
suffers from CRS and doesn't remember to pump up the middle tire (also over
8 years old) to the max pressure of 65 psi (D load range) so its not even at
the max pressure to carry the max load!
They set off down the road and even though he's driving slowly it is very
dark (no street lights) and he has problems seeing the road because of the
glare of oncoming vehicles through the rain spotted windshield and his
glasses. Even though the GMC has GREAT headlights he doesn't spot the
humongous pot hole on the soft shoulder side of the road. He hits it with
the passenger side front wheel which pulls the steering wheel to the right.
A couple of seconds later the middle tire hits it and goes BOOM! The rear
passenger side of the coach drops, the blown rear tire hits the ground, the
coach pivots on the two blown tires, and goes off the road. The drop off on
the soft shoulder side is severe and the coach rolls over. Fortunately they
both have their seatbelts on and survive but the coach is toast! Come to
think of it IIRC something like this has happened!
Here's a more morbid version if the blowout is on the driver's side:
They set off down the road and even though he's driving slowly it is night
and he has problems seeing the road because of the glare of oncoming
vehicles through the rain spotted windshield and his glasses. Even though
the GMC has GREAT headlights he doesn't spot the humongous pot hole on the
left side of the lane. He hits it with the driver's side front wheel which
pulls the steering wheel to the left. A couple of seconds later the driver
side middle tire hits it and goes BOOM! The rear driver's side of the coach
drops, the blown rear tire hits the ground, the coach pivots on the two
blown tires, and the GMC swings into the oncoming lane and is hit head on by
an oncoming 18 wheeler. Both the driver and passenger are killed instantly!
Obviously these made up scenarios are a product of my vivid (read sick)
imagination and highly unlikely to occur, HOWEVER as far as I'm concerned I
don't want to be the one to tell people it's OK to drive their GMC on one
rear tire!
Regards,
Rob M.

I carry 2 spare tyres, one on the back and one in the roof pod with 2 spare airbags.
If you are planning on changing your own punctures on the road, make sure prior that you can undo the lug nuts with a wheelbrace (unless you have a cordless impact) and that they havent been ridiculously overtightened by some goon in a tire store.

It amazes me as to how much crap and spare parts people carry. There is always FEDEX and UPS who can bring something to you from the Jims. I plan to be a minimalist when we travel. Spare tire and basic tools, of course, but most engine parts I need are an Autozone away, and there are always the Jim's for the GMC only stuff...
My 2 cents.

I blew a non gmc tire on a holiday in the town of payson, az. The local tire shop wanted a crazy amt of money to get me a tire like $300 more then the tire was worth. I didn't have a spare and they couldn't get my size tire in their town for a normal price for 2 days. So we stayed at a hotel.

That's a good idea, but it doesn't help you if you if you are nowhere... It still takes up space, And if there is no rim, it takes up space Inside or in the pod.
gmcrv1 wrote on Mon, 27 December 2010 19:36 | Has anyone thought of carrying just a spare new tire without the rim? Think
of all the things you can stuff into a non-mounted tire!
Particularly if you are running an odd ball size tyre...
