Chuck, first thing I replaced on our coach in 04. I suspect most have been replaced by older owners but you are right. New owners need to check those.

I lot of us have replaced ours with JR's teflon / Stainless lines. They will last a lifetime so it is no longer a concern to a lot of us.

I had mine made locally. The guy said I would never need any new ones as these are some kind of heavy hydraulic lines. Hope he is correct. I do keep my eyes on them.

Glad this topic came up. I cut my '74 lines to put in a cooler and those suckers are tough. I tried pruning sheers, then huge bolt cutters and finally hacked my way through with a hack saw. I never dreamed one could leak.

That is the problem. They are suppose to flex to absorb the difference in engine movement (vibration) and the fixed frame mounted radiator. If they are hard eventually the vibration with cause them to leak. Especially at the joint between the hose and the steel pipe or fitting.

Replace them.

A guy I know here in Tucson, who is (was) rebuilding a coach, checked his. They looked OK and didn't leak. He decided to change them anyway and when he started to work on them, they crumbled in his hands.

One of the first things I did was to replace those hoses too. Got the ones JR makes from Jim K. they had been replaced at some point in the past with hydraulic hoses and probably would have lasted forever, but I wasn't taking any chances.

Oh no not something else to investigate! Ok where are these and what should I be looking for? I just looked at the link posted above. I think I can find them actually. How do you know if they need to be repalced?

Oil cooler lines (2). run from the oil filter adapter to the radiator. If the look fuzzy anywhere, replace. If they are hard, replace. If you have any doubts, replace them.

Ok then I do know where they go. I've seen them. Mine I notice weep fluid at the radiator.

One of the first traumas I had with my GMC was a burst oil cooler hose.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=4028

I replaced them with ones made locally, but then picked up a set of JR's at the Rapid City Rally. Never did put them in, and sold them with the coach. I wonder if Mitch installed them... They are a beautiful piece of work, like JRs' air valves.

JR Slaten makes and sells very nice replacement oil cooler lines that go
between the block adapter and the radiator.

BACKATCHA Gene.
So far, it's been really good. Nancy had gone to FL earlier this month and
got wrapped up in buying a house in Titusville. (Her sister recently bought
a winter home there and spread the excitement to Nancy). To my absolute
relief, she backed out when the inspection report was faxed to us last
week. Whew? I do not want to take care of two homes at my age. Especially
one in FL with all the problems associated with a warm humid climate. Life
is good!

Question: Why are you guys doing so many control arms?

Steve,

This is funny! When Helen and I retired to Australia she noted that she
wanted and old Aussie farm house with the veranda all the way around "down
the coast" to restore. I told her that I restored one house (our townhouse
in Sydney was built in 1876) and wasn't going through that pain again so I'd
build her a brand new one in the style of the late 1800's. Off we went
looking for 5 - 10 acres. I could build her house and a BIG shed (Aussie for
workshop/garage) for me. We found the property and were negotiating the
price when I mentioned that the area was ideal as we could take the train up
to Sydney when we wanted to visit the "big smoke." She then told me that she
didn't want to live there just go there on the weekends. I told her that
there was no bloody way I was maintaining two houses and that if she wanted
to head for the south coast for a weekend she could make reservations at a
hotel or B&B! That was eight years ago, guess how many times we've been to
the south coast. ZIP!

Regards,
Rob M.

Like you, I am a happy camper.
It just didn't make any sense to me to jump in the motorhome (house on
wheels), drive all the way across country to another house, park the house
on wheels, move all the crap from the house on wheels into the 2nd fixed
house, then undo it all again in a couple months. ESPECIALLY when her
sister has a 4 bedroom house two miles down the road that we could stay in
for free or heaven forbid, we could even stay in the motorhome and have some
privacy and not have to be around her sister's dickhead husband.
Actually, I think she's a bit relieved once she cancelled the contract.
Fantastic deals on houses in FL right now. Some real beauties for
practically nothing. I like it where I am though.
Merry Christmas to you and Helen and hope you make it by here at least once
while your visiting the states.

...... some kind of heavy hydraulic lines...../...they had been replaced at some point in the past with hydraulic hoses and probably would have lasted forever, but I wasn't taking any chances.

When I was having replacements made-up they kept talking about how much pressure they would hold. I wasn't concerned how many 1000# they would hold. I was concerned with the temperature rating of the hose. When I started investigating that, I found that the hose they were going to use had a max temp rating of around 200 degrees. Had to look a while to find a hose with a rating of 300 degrees and the pickings were slim. I could not identify any with any higher rating than 300 degrees. Beware if you are having hoses made-up that suitable hose is being used. Or just buy from one of our vendors because they know. Twisted Evil
