New CPR technique!

This video demonstrates a new CPR technique, which is much simpler that
the one used for years prior. Hopefully, you or I will never need to use
this, but in case we do, this is very useful information. Please watch and
forward to your friends and family, if you haven't already done so. You
never know, a life may be saved utilizing this new procedure.

Thanks, Paul, I'd heard there was a new technique, but this is the
first explanation I've seen.

I sort of disagree with the idea of spreading this training by the internet like a viral "lost child" email. Even this simplified CPR requires some training. The real tricky problem is that if someone tries this and fails, then they will bear a burden of guilt for not bringing the victim back to life. ( have a specific case in mind) Actually CPR is effective in only about 5% of the cases.
It would be a better idea to encourage people to get actual ARC or AHS training. A GMC would make a good mobile training facility. (ObGMcontent)

Hardie,

Your point is well taken; but, the fact is that few of us are going to
get training -- that's just an immutable fact. So, isn't some
knowledge and attempt better than nothing? I'd rather feel guilt for
failing than for being unable to try.

Actually, I believe the new compression only method is now
the approved method from both American Red Cross AND
the American Heart Association. I believe both "got on
board" within the last six months.

Any technique is better than no technique. I developed this philosophy from
my days working in the ER. Of course, I'm assuming there's a basic
understanding of what needs to be done. Doing nothing is akin to signing the
death certificate.

I've witnessed a couple of lives saved from a half-baked technique.

Of course, better to have great training but, as Ken points out, it ain't
gonna happen for the vast majority of the population. My understanding is
that Samaritan laws apply for such emergencies.

Yes, for the public, this is the method being taught. Providers still work with CPR.

So called good Samaritan laws vary from State to State. Just ask Jerry Sienfeld.

Use caution with infants, the depressions are much shallower.
I had a chance to play good samaritan yesterday in the parking lot of our
local Safeway. Pretty packed by folks stocking up for the holidays and I
had to park a long way from the door (and door dingers). As I was cutting
through the rows, I heard someone hollering. I found the vehicle and a
young man was sitting on the P-side front rocker panel, feet on the ground,
doubled over clutching his stomach. Others looked, then hurried on by. I
went over to see what the problem was (I thought he was vomiting) and that
was when I saw all the blood on his hands and arms. One look at the stomach
wound and I grabbed the first rag I saw in the vehicle and had him remain
where he was and put as much pressure as he could on the wound, then I
flagged down a car and presuaded the woman to let me use her cell phone to
call 911. There was a young lady in the drivers seat and I told her to
shut off the vehicle and stay where she was. I asked her what happened and
she very calmly said that he stabbed himself. Then she took out her cell
phone and very calmly called her girl friend. I'm pretty sure the gist of
this is that she was dumping him and he grabbed a pair of 6" scissors and
ran himself through. Both 17 yrs old. Then Sierra Vista's finest showed
up, I gave a quick brief and told them where the scissors were and finished
my shopping.
What on earth goes through these kids minds these days?

Steve,

I'm glad you were there, willing and able to help!

The angst of youth is more than we can possibly understand -- Romeo &
Juliette predated "these days". I remember some of the "heart breaks"
and wonder whether the fact that I got over them so easily was because
I didn't experience the depth of devotion some do, or was just more
level-headed. :-)

At that age, they see what are temporary
setbacks as PERMANENT situations and then
apply PERMANENT "solutions" to temporary
problems. It's a lack of the experience
to properly evaluate the situations for
what they really are and then initiate an
appropriate response.

I had a friend whose 15-year old daughter
found her dad's 357 and shot herself to
death in the living room in front of ALL
her family, including younger sister. It
was all over a boy of about the same age
who was definitely not approved by dad.

It is as depressing and troubling to me
today as it was over 20 years ago.
