Steering wheel, headliner, and inactivity [message #108869] |

I went to look at a PB (TZE167V101992 for Dave G) that has sat for about 6 years, a 77' with 403, 40k on the speedo.
Steering wheel is completely deteriorated so I wonder what a replacement would run. Also, the headliner needs replacement (about 50% of it is shot). I am asking what a pro charges for a headliner.
The coach looks clean and straight but the sun has done a number on it.
My wife would love for me to get rid of the bus (I am not convinced) so I am "sniffing" around the GMC's that are for sale in my immediate neighborhood.
This owner emphasizes that this is a "project" and will have to be towed from the storage lot. I am wanting to see what the two items above will run, then decide if I want to run thru all of the systems and wake up this beast after it's long nap.

Larry, sounds like to me that you should be getting that coach for a song and a dance. If so, those things are negligible. My steering wheel is from a 64 GMC pickup and looks much nicer than the s-10 wheels, in my opinion. Steering wheels are a dime a dozen. The headliner is something anyone can do with a little patience and time. I have lots of time, at the moment, but little patience so mine is not getting done this winter unless Teri gets all fired up and boots me into gear. You have a younger wife who can assist you with some of the interior work, so try to grab that coach for as little as you can.

Larry,
The steering wheel and headliner are very minor projects on a
motorhome that the owner says has to be towed from the storage lot in
my estimation. There are many GM steering wheels that fit the
motorhome as well as many good GMC MH steering wheels that are
available from those that have updated theirs. Also the headliner
replacement isn't rocket science either. BTW it would help to know
where your "immediate neighborhood" is?

My advise is that you will be way ahead in both time and money to take your time and look for a decent coach that is not a "project" unless you are looking for a new hobby of working on an old motorhome.
A motorhome is not like a car - just getting it to run and stop reliably is only half (or less) of the concerns. There are many other systems that need to work well before you will enjoy using your coach.
That said I complement you on your leaning toward the Classic GMC. It is a great coach, the owners are amazingly friendly and helpful, and there is a very good established network of folks who supply parts and do service.

Bill, I am a former "GMC netter" and got rid of my coach when I thought I wanted something bigger. I went all thru my old PB (a '75) and drove it all over the US.
I went thru my 4106 GM bus and have it 80% converted but have used it from the "get go".
This Owner is absentee, lives far from here. I think he is a bit worried about liability. Frankly, if it starts (and runs), I would not hesitate to drive it the 50 miles to my garage (after checking out the systems).
Dan, my wife IS younger....(maybe your age, ha ha).

Nelson, Larry is in Springfield, Mo, 220 miles west of our home.
Bill, Larry is a previous owner who sold out and went with the bus. I have been aggrivating him for 2-3 years to get another GMC. He has been to our home and is real asset for GMC owners. He is very capable of doing this kind of work, which surprized me that he even threw out such trivial stuff to the net. I think he just needs us to encourage him to once again become one of "us". Normally I would agree with just what you say Bill about buying a ready made GMC. But, this time, knowing Larry, I think he might be doing this right.

As you have found out, you can get a GMC steering wheel at a junk yard
unless you want an original in good shape. I have one of those. I put a GMC
mini van wheel on mine. Some have rubber on the wheel and some, more rare,
have leather.
Headliner - You ask what a pro would charge. Southland in Buford, GA charged
me a little less than $1,000. If you have the room to work on it, a Palm
Beach is easier to deal with than a Royale. Many on here have replaced
theirs. There are lots of photos on the photo site to help in guiding you.
Some guys have even put wood on their ceilings.
Consider it a plus that it's a 77 -- better dash air.

Bill,
While perusing the photo site, I couldn't help but notice some '55, '56 and
'57 Tbird parts in the background at your shop. Are you the same Bill Brown
that also does the old birds? Bought my first '56 in 1970 - and still have
it. Sorry I didn't recognize you as a long time tbirder!
Now I'm doing this GMC thing...

Absolutely no problem, Bill....I love this forum, it is absolutely the BEST of it's kind on the internet.
