As I understand it - The APA Publications Manual (a standard for researchers/writers in the US) describes it more or less in these terms:
If:
for personal use only,
full credit is given to the original author (name/title,
year of publication etc, and
not sold:
then it is an exchange/discussion of professional info - not theft.
Courtesy likely calls for you to ask permission, however.
