Hello GMCers,
Having trouble with my Speedometer... doesn't work consistently, or for the most part, at all!
When the needle stops moving, I can temporarily get it working again by disconnecting the speedo cable from the transducer, and then connecting and tightening again. Then, it will work properly for a few miles. Later, it will start bouncing around dramatically. Finally, it will stop moving altogether soon thereafter.
I've lubed the cable properly, and this doesn't seem to fix the issue. Jim K sold me a small plastic gear that goes in the transmission, but I haven't had time to get underneath and fix it.
Are there any other reasons why my speedometer would not be functioning properly?

It almost sounds like the cable is disengaging at the speedo head or the cruise transducer. I doubt very much that it is the gear in the governor since that will be an all or nothing situation and your trans won't shift. It's possible that the femal fitting at the speedo or the transducer may be rounded out a bit just enough to keep the cable engaged at the ends.

Andre, Portland Speedometer can restore that to new condition, I just had
them re do a speedo head for a 69 Dodge PU & they did a super job for about
$130.00 including Freight. Let me know if it is the speedometer head & I
will give you a Phone # to call them.

On my coach, the speedometer quit working, but the trans still shifted properly. The fault was the transducer added to the speedo cable to provide the signal to the cruise control. I would look at that, and make use the both parts of the cable are connected and lubed.

Take a minute and pop the speedo bullet out of the transmission for a quick check.The driver gear and its shaft the cable goes into are usually plastic and could be worn/damaged as well.

All of the suggestions have been good -- for individual parts of the system.
But no one's suggested using a logical approach to the problem: Start at
the center of the series of components -- the cruise control transducer.
1. Jack up the front end high enough to provide wheel clearance from the
ground so you can make the speedometer work. Place jack stands for safety.
2. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the input side of the CC.
3. Start the engine and put the transmission in Drive.
4. Check for rotation of the disconnected cable grasp it lightly with your
fingers to try to prevent rotation.
A. If it's rotating strongly, the problem's NOT with the speedometer
gear, VSS, or lower cable. Check the upper cable, then the speedometer
itself.
B. If the cable won't continue to rotate when you grip it, then the
problem IS with one of those items. Earlier suggestions should be helpful
in determining which is the culprit.
