OK,,, its full speed ahead on the dash replacement. Going to do something like what Ken H. has done. Unfortunately I showed Kens dash to the "Boss". Now I have yet to amend the trip report but it was COLD, like really COLD. We both had cold air coming in when driving forward. So I went to the Eastern and Western states pges to look for telecope column years because I'm doing ALL the driving because she can't reach the pedals. So I need blocks on the pedals or a telescopeing column. And a power up down seat base. In the junkyard jems paper it states "69-78 tilt and telescoping column from BOP and caddy will fit but only the upper part (lots of work). Consider 78 and later with telescope which may be disirable". If 69-78 fits and later or after 78 does not how does 78 and later tele work???? Now a Q. for Ken. On the foto site one of your captions said you lowerd your column. Why?????,,,,thanks,,,,PL

Paul,
I lowered the column because it's more comfortable for me in the position I
prefer my 3-way seat. I'd been wanting to do it for years, but didn't go to
the trouble until installing the new dash -- it became a natural part of the
new ad hoc design.
I'd probably have also installed a tilt/telescope column, but it won't work
with the Grant 2000 Security System which I use to make my steering wheel
removable. I'd REALLY hate to give that up.

Paul, I think Kelvin in Eugene, OR installed a repositioned column in his
23' when he did his dash & it is a work of art. He is a frequent contributor
to the net. Kelvin, do you have any pix of this mod for the net?

Paul;
I installed a Caddy tilt/tele column about 6 years ago. It has been great for me, but I'm at the other end of the height spectrum [6'4"] It was, for me, one of the most beneficial things I've done to the coach to provide driver comfort.
You are correct, the columns must be 'blended,' Caddy tilt/tele on top, M/H coluumn on the bottom. The reason is that the lower shaft, the part that goes from the joint to the c/v joint at the bottom of the column is about 50% larger in diameter than the car unit.
the change over takes some time, but requires mostly patience. I don't recall it being particularly difficult. GM calls for a special tool to remove the hinge bolts on the outer casing of the column. I used to 1/4-20 thread bolts and made a little leverto draw the bolts out of the housing.
take your time when it comes to separating the two halves of the inner shaft. the nylon joint has a spring device running through it and it will 'spring' out if you don't pay attention when taking the two halves apart. to do this you'll have to release the c/v joint at the bottom to allow you to raise the shaft up about an inch. the upper and lower halves are separated by angling the two to about the 70% degree point.
Then you simply reassemble the thing using the caddy upper parts. do your disassembly learning on the donor column. there's not much to damage and it's easier to see the parts when it's on your bench.
the other part you have to salvage is the wiring harness from the caddy column. it's quite a bit longer than the stock m/h unit and will be necessary to let the column move freely. I recall that it was a simple plug and play operation, but i vaguely recall having to change 1 wire, which is pretty good considering there's about 20 of them!
if you have any other questions, feel free to contact me directly.
good luck.

Paul, 80's columns work. I like the rwd Caddys over the fwd but the fwd do work. If you get one that has the wiper control on the signal lever it makes a real nice addition for electric wipers in the future. The early 80's caddys did not have the wiper switch but you can switch parts from another GM or jeep column to change it over.

Sorry. That was a surprise to me when I started researching the removable
wheel. It's because of the telescope control lever just below the steering
wheel, concentric with the column. I took Grant's word for it not working
and never tried to figure out a way around the problem. You might find a
way.
You DID find Richard Sowers' column paper at gmceast.com, didn't you?
