I was just wondering since we are having a real cold snap, how the GMC could be used in the winter. What are the things one has to do in order to use it, say for a ski trip and such. Get a set of chains for it? What kind of chains work for it??
How do I utilize the water systems, or do I?? These kind of questions. Just wondered since I was seeing the lake effect hit the northeast of the country...it brought it to mind.

I just put the "Murray" to bed for the winter.

I drove it 5 miles home in 4-6" of wet snow several years ago after installing a TBI kit that day. It was Ok, but I can see where it could easily get stuck.

Remember the holding tank is exterior, so water in it would freeze.

Don't forget the frame will get attacked by winter salt, especially where it gets trapped between the main frame and the inner frame between the rear wheels. You would want to wash that area to rinse out any salt.

Yeah I was just curious. I had read some postings from someone who had used his for ski trips in colorado. He said once he placed chains on it he was able to get around pretty good in the mountain roads during a heavy snow storm. As far as the water system, I had also read someone useing RV antifreeze in the holding tank (amount unknown), and then running the furnace to keep the fresh water lines from freezing. Don't know if this is wise, but just was wondering about it's useablity in the winter.

Thanks,
Tom

The GMC Vacationland coloring book shows someone using it in winter, so I guess that about says it all.

Our goal is to do everything that's in the coloring book before the kids grow up.

Tom,

I live in the Colorado mountains and I keep my coach nice and dry my keeping it stored inside my large (32 x 26 foot garage) and it comes out when the snow is gone by early May.

Randy, The GMC Cascaders just concluded our annual Christmas Rally at
Pheasant Ridge RV Park in Wilsonville, Oregon. Just 20 mi South of Portland.
We generally have one around Portland around this time of year. Last year
the Rally occured during an Ice storm East of Portland. Everyone got home
safely. If you encounter very severe weather, it only makes sense to wait
until the plows & sanding trucks have done their work before proceeding. The
previous owner of my coach had a trailer large enough for 4 Snow machines
and used it to tow up into the cascades to play in the snow. He had traction
tires and chains, but said he never used the chains. Jim K sells a positive
locking differential that would seem to be a good addition for this type of
activity. Incidentally, I think we had 25 or 30 coaches this last weekend.

Randy,

Avion's have a storage compartment that goes under the Dinette and across
the aisle and ends under the love seat. There is a door outside for access.

It was so owners could store SKIS in it!

My thinking is the best way to use a GMC in the winter is to head for the Southwest. We ran air in the car today. No chance of anything freezing here, so far.

Great advice on this subject. I'm definatly reconsidering the Colorado idea for sking. Think I'll keep it parked this winter.
Like the coloring book. Awesone find, I'll be printing that one up for some of my camping friends, we'll have a good laugh from that one. Right now I'm using the coach just around my state for fishing. Was thinking about trips to go on to stretch her legs a bit...but the Colorado ski trip is now out.

Great GMCSJS rally here in Amado Dan. It was hot, not warm, hot enough
yesterday for everyone to retreat to their coaches and break out the shorts
and T shirts.
The cold weather will get here but not for a while yet.

This all drags up a memory of a short (at least the part I heard) discussion many years ago between to SOB owners of waiting in the lobby for some work to be completed (installation of a first generation Thermasan).

I came into the discussion late but it was apparently about driving in less than good conditions. One asked the other what was the best thing he found to put on the tires for winter traction.

The other conversant looked the first in the eye and said, "Miles".

I had to interrupt them there, and about a week later I figured out what the answer meant.

Dan has a good plan. Too bad I will never get to retire.

We use our coach to go to all the Philadelphia Eagles home games. That takes us right up to January. I have already put the pink stuff in all the traps and in the freash water tank so the MH is winterized. We carry fresh water in gallon jugs for washing and cooking. I use a mix of anti-freeze and water (not the pink stuff) for the toilet. I don't take the coach if the weather is bad, snowing, sleeting, freezing rain. If something like that occurs while we are away we just curl up and stay warm till the weather clears. Our trip is about 125 miles one way.

I think the fear of freezing while using the coach is overrated.  Our GMC was used to take the family tubing and snowmobiling at 6,000 feet near Donner Pass with no winterizing.  There was enough thermal mass in the holding tank and internal heating elsewhere to protect everything.  It was for one overnight and then back to 60 degrees in the bay area.

The next year, after leaving Quartzsite, we went to Boise by way of Las Vegas and Ely Nevada.  We parked for the night at a RV park next to a casino in Ely at 17 degrees ($11.00) with no winterizing.  We used the furnace and two electric heaters and slept up front on the fold out couch as the bedroom was too cold.  We awoke to new snow at -7 degrees!  No water would flow but the motor started.  It did not thaw at 35 degrees in Boise nor till two days later after we had been home 12 hours.  No damage to notice till our next trip when we found the frozen fluids in the macerrator had cracked the plastic on the pump - $500 for diagnostics, new macerator and a gate valve later I am not much wiser.   I insulated the macerator pump lines and added a light bulb that can be hooked up to the battery to keep it warm in very cold climates and plan to take coach and the snow machines to the deep stuff next week.

I bought my GMC back in 1981 when we lived in Michigan. At the time we had 4 children and we used the GMC in the wintertime a lot. Three of our children were in competitive swimming. We would take the GMC overnight to the places where the swim meets were being held. Sometimes it was close to zero degrees but we never had trouble with the interior freezing. Our holding tank dump tube (this was before macerators) would freeze and we couldn't dump but the tank held enough so that was no problem. We burned a lot of propane as the furnace had to run almost constantly to keep the inside warm enough but it worked well for us.

We still use it from time to time in the winter.
