I'm not typing this post so I can rehash how horrible I got burned the day I bought my GMC and hours later it blew up, and how got burned out of $14,000 from a rip off mechanic shop in the southern CA desert who "fixed" it. Those days are past me and time to move on. The reason Im saying this is Im sure I may get responses that state I should contact them however I'd rather drive my gmc off the GW Bridge before that will ever happen again....I can tell everyone here where to avoid in southern CA! But when I bought my GMC I didn't know what I was buying, new nothing about the forum or sponsors and things are looking much, much better these days.
Anyway this shop "rebuilt" my 455 engine. However since day #1 after the rebuild it has what a few close yet very mechanical friends call a noisy lifter. Sometimes its louder then other days, sometimes I can't hear it all all. Engine drives strong. Everyone that hears it says "its running good"
I only have about 1,000 miles on the new engine. Before it broke in it ran no where near as well I say, however on a trip from the mountains coming back it seemed like broke in and has run strong to this day.
Is a lifter something to worry about?

Michael.
"lifter noise" may be something to be concerned about. I would first want to determine the actual source of the noise.
On a day when you hear the noise use a piece of rubber hose (a 2-3 foot length of heater hose works well) as a stethescope and listen to the engine to locate the source. Do NOT hold the end of the rubber hose in your ear but near the ear. Initial clicking noise on start up may be valve train or it may be elsewhere --

Well it does have headers and your right I've heard what sounded like a lifter when I knew they leaked. Both headers had leaks. Being on a budget I had a friend have to use two gaskets on the header on the passenger side. This stopped the passenger header from having any leaks. (I KNOW IT WASNT THE CORRECT WAY OF FIXING THE HEADER LEAK)
The drivers side header may have a minor leak still and it could be that. But sure sounds like its coming from the drivers side front side of the value cover.
Someone told me that maybe over time it will work itself out?

It can be that the valve height is not correct.
You can correct that.
Call me if you determin, that it is not exaust noise.
Can people at NAPA give you info????

If it turns out to indeed be a lifter as your friends suspect, I would be first concerned that your engines oil pressure is too low.
You may not hear it when the motor is cold , the oil is thicker and the pressure higher, but as it warms up it may get noisier as the oil heats up and thins..
Low oil pressure at idle (less than 7 psi) will cause them to clatter, but as the rpms rise they may quieten as the oil pressure rises to at least 35 to 40 psi @ 2,000 rpm.
Lifters can clatter through the plungers getting stuck due to dirt, or incorrect manufacturing tollarences causing them to bleed down continuously.
If it is indeed the lifter, dont keep driving it like that or it will eventually damage the lobe(s) on the camshaft.

Again, I'm not even remotely wanting to try to get it warrantied. Even if not through them. I trust like zero mechanics at the moment. If I lived abit closer to JimK I'd love for him to go through that and my fuel system.
Im fairly sure its a lifter, one of my employees today was saying it has to be since after start up the noise does tend to go away.

Bro, I feel for ya, if someone hosed me for 14k, they better at least have the sense to leave the country, and it better not be one that I travel to, or have friends in. Is there any way you can maybe contact the California BAR and leverage at least a partial refund? a lawyer might not also be a bad idea depending on the circumstances.
I learned to turn my own wrench, and even though I always had an interest in mechanical things, I learned primarily because of shady mechanics who constantly screwed my mother. On our old Lincoln they once charged her $900 and change for a rear brakes, 2 years later when I had gathered enough skill (I was in my mid teens) to do brakes, I found that they had capped the rear brake line after the MC, and that the wheel cylinders were still the original 20 some year old ones that came on the car in 72 and they were rusted shut!
I've since blown head gaskets, trannies, retrofitted, turbocharged, and I do about 95% of the work myself. I only farm it out if I don't have the equipment I.E. machine shop, or specialty crap I.E. transmission rebuilding, but about anyone can rebuild an engine with the help of a good machine shop and a basic set of tools which can be found at about any autoparts store or harbor freight, Shop manual and/or an instructional DVD or heck even youtube for the novice. the nice thing is being to tell the rip off artists out there to go pound sand.
I'm not sure what your situation is, but if you can, I highly recommend acquiring some basic mechanical skills, I've saved thousands of dollars that way, plus the satisfaction of knowing quality parts were used and that it was done by the book!

I have told his story before but...
I sent my daughter to a local place recommended to me to have the front end aligned on her Blazer. When she got there they came out and said she needed new ball joints. She asked which ones. They said all of them. She responded "That's strange I just replaced the two lower ones two weeks and and that is why I came in for the alignment." "Take my car off of your hoist and I'll go somewhere else that won't rip me off."
She had not just replaced them two weeks before but she was smart enough to know she was being conned by a service writer who had not even looked at the car. She took it elsewhere and they aligned it for her. I since have heard of others having problems with this same local shop. They are still in business so they must be making money.

Making money? I think you mean stealing money! Any shop pushing work that doesn't need to be done, probably won't even install the new parts, just charge for it and keep your car for a few hours then call you to come "pick it up" I don't know about you but I consider that theft by technical means, and I for one don't take too kindly to that...

Just one more reason for the Black List. Even if you do not do work yourself, you know the local area... and might know what shops to avoid.

My 403 was replaced at the 80k mark with a new one (not rebuilt) and I now have about 130k on it. It has sporadically had a sticky lifter for the last 15 to 20 years and it does it with no pattern that I can detect. I let it idle for 5 minutes and it goes away. Then it may not do it again for 3 or 4 months. Although I'm not overly worried about it now, it does bug me, but so do a lot of things:)
