we got the wonderful news that we are going to be grandparents for the first time, I realize this is a little premature but I am already planing for our first campout with the grandchild (yes I am excited)but I am concerned with the furnace in my Birchaven, it works fine but should I be concerned with any potentially hazardous ommisions from these old units ie carbon monoxide, got to keep my grandchild safe, thank you for any information

Yes, with any combustion source (heater, stove, 3 way fridge, engine) there is the possibility of CO leaks. Get a CO and propane detector and keep the batteries fresh!

In our community, the fire department also has detectors that they use if someone smells gas in a house. Any RV dealership should also have the proper equipment to check your coach, but I think that a detector is an absolute must for safety.

I have said this in the past, here it is once again. I had a cousin, his wife and baby daughter who were all killed in a CO furnace accident (but not in an RV). So, it is not just your grandchild who is in danger. It is a very nasty way to die.

That said, is it an original Sol Air furnace? If so, probably best not to use it or try to repair it. If it is a Suburban, there are fewer issues, but still, as noted in other responses, get a CO detector. I would run the furnace for a few days in cold weather, with the CO monitor on, and no one in the coach, to be sure it is working and not leaking CO.

I've got an original Solair in my GMC and tried it out for the first time. After about an hour, my CO detector alarmed. I hadn't noticed anything unusual - no odor, no headache, etc. So I can understand how someone asleep wouldn't detect the problem until it was too late. Jim Hupy advised me to get a new heater in no uncertain terms. Mr. Fixit, like I am, is still considering pulling it out to see if I can "fixit", but I'll probably get a new one -- sometimes my wife and I don't agree.

I know that I don't trust my Sol-aire enough to sleep with it on. I
don't think I'll every trust a combustion furnace in a small space like
an RV. I have a CO detector and it doesn't go off with the furnace.
Sometimes if I leave the engine idling a long time without moving it
occasionally will peep just a little (it's mounted in the old vacuum
hose connector near the door and my exhuast needs to be redone.) My PO
put it in and I wouldn't have a coach without it.

I'd put the furnace replacement higher on my list, but it looks like a
big headache trying to figure out how to reroute the outdoor venting to
fit the GMC. None of them fit out-of-the-box that I know of. I've
studied the pics of homebrewed ways people have crafted to adapt them.
If there's a kit available or an easier way to do it I'd be interested.
I don't know very much about these systems and I'd hate to screw it up.

In the meantime, I just run the furnace a bit when it's cold and again
when all of the heat has leaked out of all the holes in the GMC. At
least with a leaky coach there's a better fresh air supply :)
