Larry,

If you are in MI, you can borrow my tool set.
Or, you could come by, we'll pull it off and you can press it back on with a long bolt.

Larry:

Harbor Freight also has the puller. I paid about $15 for one using a 20% off coupon. Looks like price has gone up since last year.

What allen set screw? I've never seen nor heard of one on a GM power
steering pump. Just a press fit.

Hmmm -- is there a washer under it so that it holds the pulley on? If so,
it may be left over from the installation. Good luck getting it out. It's
probably grade 8, so an impact wrench might take it right out. Wish you had
my little Dewalt 1/4" -- that's right up its alley.

it,I can't set how it
holds anything.

Larry;
The allen socket you see is in the end of the pump shaft. It is not a set screw or bolt. It is used to put an allen wrench in the socket to hold the pump shaft from turning when you pull and install the pulley with the puller/installer.

I'll have to round up the special puller, I don't see how it works, but I'll
get the pulley off. I'll been working on English cars for 40 years and
they don't have power steering.

The pulley is pressed on. There is a pulley tool available from
Autozone loan to remove the Pulley. It grips the groove in the
pulley with two pieces that fit in the small groove of the pulley
right under what you think is an Allen screw. There is a screw
that pulls the pulley off by pushing against the end of the shaft
with what looks alike an Allen screw. The two pieces are held
together with an outer ring that goes around the outside of
the two pieces. It works similar to the bearing puller the
Canadian made. Just a much smaller scale. Sorry I don't
remember his name.

Been a while since i've had one in my hands but don't these PS pumps have a hexagonal hole in the end of the shaft with threads further inside the hole?

If I'm right all you need to do is pull the pulley off. There is to fastener to hold it in place, just a press fit. Re installation is as simple as pushing the pulley back on using a bolt threaded into the shaft internal threads.

I'll have to round up the special puller, I don't see how it works, but I'll get the pulley off. I'll been working on English cars for 40 years and they don't have power steering.
thanks, larry erd

Then I guess you are a real ace on trouble shooting electrics, eh?

Been a while since i've had one in my hands but don't these PS pumps have a hexagonal hole in the end of the shaft with threads further inside the hole?

If I'm right all you need to do is pull the pulley off. There is to fastener to hold it in place, just a press fit. Re installation is as simple as pushing the pulley back on using a bolt threaded into the shaft internal threads.

Here is some more info on the Saginaw PS pump. Units built before 1975 had a 5/8-inch inside diameter tapered slide-on pulley assembly that was held stationary by a keyway and shaft nut. There were some incidents of shaft breakage with these units.

Two versions were used after 1975, both used a pulley that was pressed onto a 3/4-inch shaft with no keyway. The first unit was used from 1975-'79 (and some 1980 cars) and can be distinguished by the USS threaded holes on the front of the pump for the mounting brackets. Pumps used from 1980 to 1996 looked identical in outward appearance to the earlier units; however, the mounting holes on the face for mounting brackets were metric.

All pumps used from 1963 to 1979 used a 5/8-inch-18 inverted flare nut on the end of the power steering hose.

Another way to determine the SAE unit from the metric pump is by the internal thread of the pressure valve retaining nut. The metric 1980-and-up units used a 16mm x 1.5 o-ring thread on the pressure hose. The newer versions also have an "X" cast into the mounting face of the pump and require a wider square-cut o-ring to be used on the reservoir mounting bolts or studs.
