We bought this 1973 GMC 23' Sequoia last spring. Since then we have installed within 1500 miles or less (most within 250-750 miles) has about 67,000 original miles:
New (6) Tires, (mounted on alcoas)
New KYB Shocks
New trans SuperCooler
New Front bearings
New Front Knuckle
New Steering Box
Rebuilt the 455
New dual stage LP gas regulator
Sealed the refrig compartment
(getting its on order a new orafice for frig)
Had trans/diferencial gaskets replaced
New Airbags, disconnected the air ride however and just installed shader valves
New Ignition Switch
New vacuum breaker for toilet
Replaced rubber lines from power steering and trans cooler
All interior bulbs upgraded to LED
Exhaust work, needed section of pipe replaced
New Holly Carb
All plumbing was gone through with a plumber
And generator was just serviced with all onan parts.
Coach has headers, (2) flat panel tvs, dvd player, 1990 furnace, norcold frig (Im replacing the oraface), newer sleeper couch, go "spot" light, cd player, microwave, awning, 4kw onan with about 60 hrs on it. I think its from 2000/2001, coleman a.c. and lots more.
HOWEVER, the wife is starting to imply the over $30 grand could of been spent on a newer coach ( I agree but love my gmc ). With two kids, the 23 ft GMC is a little small.
I've spent a fortune getting this coach up and running, and hours upon hours of time. She may want something thats alittle more plug in and play. I'm not sure but this is a gmc forum and maybe someone would know if we did sell it what would it be worth. I think its so close to getting finished but without much mechanical knowledge, its really hard to finish this.

You need to get her involved with the community of GMC owners that share your affection for the GMC. You will build confidence in your abilities and she will meet the folks who help you build that confidence. Get out there and use it and if it breaks try to fix it (with help from your friends on the 'net) and if you really get stuck, drag it home.
But the most likely outcome is that you WON'T get stuck, but that you will share memories that build the emotional investment that looks past a few bucks difference between a newer coach and your GMC. Someday you'll find yourselves not using it for whatever reason and the decision to sell will become clearer.
But today is probably not that day. Today is the day to begin planning a trip to Yosemite in the spring and think of all the 'netters you might meet along the way and back. Get the family involved in planning the trip, making the time line to accomplish prpearations, map out the trip and countdown to a very memorable time with your family in your rolling fort.

Looks like no one wants to answer your actual question. I'm no GMC pricing expert but I'm fairly certain you won't see anywhere near $30K.
Look at past auctions on ebay.
Now, back to convincing your wife;
What else could you have gotten for $30K? Maybe a fairly new class C?
Not as safe, top heavy, probably poorer gas mileage, harder to drive. Can you get her behind the wheel? I believe more GMC's are driven by wives than any other coach that big.
Can you afford to take a loss on the GMC and get into something else?
You really have nothing to lose by using the coach. That nice list of new parts will still mean something to a potential buyer a year from now.

Keep in mind even a "newer" $30 grand coach would have "problems." All coaches need "something"... and few of the "newer coaches" are built to last. They loose value at a faster rate than your GMC. You will not get your "invested" money back from ANY motorhome.
"Too small" is a relative statement. It depends on your use and expectations. Many families use camper vans and they "work." Toss a tent in the pod as the kids get older and "want" more space. Terry Skinner pulled a pop-up camper AND had a real tent when he brought a bunch of teen-agers to one of the Soor rallies. (Girls in the pop-up, boys in the tent.)
I like how our 23 foot coach fits in places that newer, larger coaches will not. (I like it better than our 26 foot.) How many times have you pulled into a rest area, at night, and found the truck/rv side full of 18 wheelers, but the car side is almost empty? Being shorter than many new pickups, the 23 fits just fine in a car length parking even if it is wider than a camper van. I often take it to work and park it in the parking lot.
Like others have said, it looks like you have taken care of the big ticket items, get out and use it! Even if you do not stay over night. We use ours for tail gating, day trips and sometimes to get groceries. It is nice to put the ice cream in the freezer when you are still in the parking lot.
These coaches really work better when they are used regularly.

One man's opinion coming at you.
First, depending on the size of your kids, 23 can seem small. However, for
what you have in it there's nothing to touch it.
My wife and I have a 26-foot. We frequently have two other adult guests
along plus our two cocker spaniels. It does get tight. Especially when it
rains. But, having adult guests isn't like having your own family of the
same size.
We talked a good while and decided to buy something larger. I spent what I
could afford but did spend around $30,000 thinking I was getting something
that, because it was newer, should be "good to go" for a while.
Not so. Within the first 5,000 miles I spent another $5K having other guys
fix stuff I couldn't. There's still more work to be done on it before using
it next summer.
We have $40,000 tied up on our GMC. Of course, I couldn't get that much for
it because $12K was spent making it like I want and another $12K was spent
doing maintenance someone else didn't do. I still have a $20K coach.
Would the situation be different with a different coach and $30,000? I
seriously doubt that. You need more than twice that to get into something
made in the last 8 years. Even then you're looking at a box of sticks and
cheap siding. Probably a class C, too. For sure, what you'd get would be
much larger. Do you have the space for something larger?
Talk to other owners of coaches in your price range and find out what their
experiences are and the money they put into it. You'll quickly learn that
you're in a majority.
Hey, RVing is a hobby. Hobbies can't be cost justified. Tell her to be glad
you did something for the family instead of putting that much into a HO
train layout in the basement. Now, there's a cost figure I fail to
understand. Of course, for the money you could have bought a used yacht that
only goes on the water (but would still need repairs).

I know I love the GMC, and really do appreciate the messages. I guess at the end of the day maybe some can understand I've poured tons of time and money into this machine. Tons of people tell me I'm crazy for doing so. I think joining a GMC club will be helpful as I still have lots of questions and this is my first rv.
I just wish a local mechanic could be had that was honest. My money is easier to find then my time. I don't mind at all learning about repairs and have found it to be somewhat fun. But I have such little time to learn how to do everything it needs.

Michael,
Not to sound like a broken record, but...Try joining us at the next Saguaro Jetset rally in Amado, as a guest. You will enjoy the GMC aspect, your wife will enjoy the social aspect, and the shopping opportunities in Tubac, and your kids will enjoy the facilities at the park. A win win situation.

I need to add my two cents to the discussion. Looking at your photos, you obviously have put a lot of work into your coach and to give up now would be a tremendous waste. We have about $40K into ours and every time we discuss what we would have spent on a "newer" coach and what we'd have now we always come to the same conclusion: we are better off with the GMC. Those other ones break too and you always have to pay for help with them.
We have had our GMC for 4 years and, at first, it seemed as though we had some sort of "big" problem on every trip. In our first year or two we had to call Good Sam emergency road service 5 times. One time we got stuck at a major intersection on Christmas Day and had to be towed. After a while we thought that we'd never have an uneventful trip. I suspect that is the way you and your family feel about now?
Ours did get better and we have taken 20 trips in the four years including a 7,400 mile trip this past summer. A couple of minor problems but no more tows.
Keep your GMC, join the Saguaro Jetset and the GMC Western States clubs and come to some of the rallies.

Michael, several of the GMCers have had at least as much roadside drama with
their coaches as you and your family have had. That you have endured &
prevailed over hardship says a lot about you. You already know the value of
the GMCnet. This is only the tip of the Iceberg as to what help and fun
awaits you by joining and participating in club activities and Tech seminars
& interaction with other like minded people at Rallys. Great people,
amazingingly knowledgeble and very willing to help new members get started.
You will never regret joining. Roadside trouble & help from the Black list
on our first outing with our coach was what convinced us to join a club, &
now we belong to FMCA, GMCWS, The Cascaders, and International. There are
vendors at most rallys displaying their latest products all designed by
GMCers for GMCs. Don't get much better than that. Just my opinion.

Honestly I've never imagined the kind replies and posts, even messages off the board.
You guys are great and sure encouraging. Honestly I think after it gets just a bit more TLC, its time to join a club and meet some of you in person. I know Im a grown adult but having a group of encouraging, understanding people that have headed down the same road Im heading down now is encouraging and just what I needed. I get tons of " you throwing your money away" from all sorts of people but who cares. They either have no motorhome, or the drive boring cookie cutter ones! Plus non of them have the support like us GMC ers!
Today I ordered the new fuel vapor separator, filler neck hose, & radiator hose....I'm going to give it the TLC its been needing and join you all one of these days soon!

Armand,
I think one of the biggest reasons behind your continued enjoyment with the
GMC is the level of support and enthusiasm of your copilot.
Once you've cut your teeth on a GMC, with few exceptions, you can work on
nearly anything. Same learning curve, nothing's easy until you've done it
once...or twice.

As Steve has mentioned, having a co pilot that enjoys the GMC as much as we do is a very big plus. When she meets some of the other co pilots and sees just how much enthusiasm they share with the pilot, she might be energized. Let your wife plan some interior upgrades that suits her tastes. You might just see a big change in her once she has invested in the family "get away" machine. My co pilot, as many others', even offers to help me with mechanical upgrades. The GMC may very well become "our's" very soon. Also, don't forget to get the kids involved. Lots of good quality family time can be had while camping AND keeping the GMC up. Man, life is good when you own a Classic GMC.
