I am almost embarrassed to report that my coach got broken into while in my drive about a week ago. I had it there to do a little work on it and to get it ready to go to Florida. I am still finding things missing. Apparently, I had not fully closed the rear drivers side window and that is how the buggers gained entry. Things such as small space heater, GPS, small electric frying pan, camera, etc, etc, etc have come up missing. However, one of the most important things was a small leather bag with a selection of 1/2" drive sockets along with a good ratchet wrench. I know that one of the deep sockets fit the lug nuts for the wheels, but since my PO  put the little "kit" together, I am not sure of the rest. My question is; can anyone recommend the most used sizes I should buy to put together another kit? By choosing only the most used sizes, I save weight and room. I have a cheap 3/8" drive set that they did not take, so these would be for heavier use. As
I recall, there were about eight to ten sockets (perhaps a few more).
Thanks for any help you may offer.

Oh boy Ken, I hate to hear that. I should go lock mine up and take the keys out of it. You had the best setup for tools. I have the Sams Club tool special. Forget the brand. I paid about 60 bux for it in a carrying case. It goes where the coach goes but likely weighs 10 lbs. I carry a 3/4 breaker bar with a socket for the Alcoa lugs and a two foot cheater.

Pawn shop stuff.
Some waste of skin needs to support his habit and that is where they usually
head for to get money.

Ken,

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I had a similar thing to happen to me
years ago. They broke the vent window on my pickup truck and stole a fairly
well stocked tool box.. It took me a couple of years to realize all the
stuff that was missing.

For replacement - if you have the 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets you can get
replacement sockets by the piece at Sears, NAPA etc. By the time you do
that you can get a set of 1/2" Stanley or Husky 6 point impact sockets -
which till take all the abuse you can give them for $20-$25. Both have a
lifetime warranty. Stanley makes similar set and is available at Wally
World for the same money. Try Home Depot and Lowes, both have sets on floor
displays as you enter the store. I was told by a friend that retired as the
northeast regional manager for Snap On Tools that the traditional sockets,
wrenches etc are made in Kenosha, WI (Snap On). This does not include their
vice grips and lower line tools.

Just take a look at the individual prices vs. a set. My son recently bought
two Craftsman combination wrenches at separate trips to Sears. One wrench
was $9 and the other was $12. He could have bought them in a set with other
wrenches for $23.99.

My two cents,

*Happy Motoring!*

Ken,

Sorry to hear of your loss. I know it must be especially frustrating
knowing you helped by not latching the window. The GMC seems pretty secure
against the "casual" thief who's unwilling to smash glass. We had an
attempted break-in several years ago in a motel parking lot -- he tried to
force the entry latch open. Bent the handle out pretty severely without
getting the door open. I haven't YET bent it back perfectly; it doesn't lay
flat within the bezel -- a mild reminder to always lock up.

Sorry I can't help with a GMC-required tool list. For a while I attempted
to build such a list. Even put out a clipboard at Bean Station during one
of our work rallies with a request that everyone mark the list each time
they used a different tool. None of that worked out well. The
barely-readable grease--stained lists seemed to list everything in the shop!

Faced with starting from scratch, for a dedicated-vehicle kit, as opposed to
a shop kit, I'd visit Harbor Freight. They have some pretty good
combination wrench and 3/8" socket sets at absurdly low prices. To those
and a good set of screwdrivers, I'd add a 3/4" breaker bar with 1-1/16" and
1-1/4" (IIRC that's the front axle nut size). A few other specialty items
will catch your eye, like socket extensions, adjustable wrenches, and
pliers. You can build a pretty complete kit for <$100.

They also have some nice 1/2" deep well impact socket sets. (Good for lug nuts and the like.) They should take any abuse you dish out... as long as you do not use them with an impact wrench! Rolling Eyes

Any standard coach can be opened by going through the windows.
All one needs to do is push the inner glass into the coach , then
slide the other. The latch will not function at tat point.
I feel lit safer with the New Framless curved glass as the opening is
small and the glass doer not slide.

...

The PO of my '78 Birch made some wooden sticks, sized to fit in the grooves that the windows slide in. When left in the window frame, they keep the windows from opening. (Works like a broomstick in a sliding patio door.) He made them slightly short, so the window can be left a little bit open for ventilation.

But if someone really wants in... they will get in.

This reminds me of one time many years ago we were at Golby's place and walking by some coaches and I noticed several gashes in the GMC door. I ask Golby what happened to do this. He said someone tried to break into the coach and used an axe to try getting through the door, but finally gave up. Makes you wonder how smart people are when all he had to do is hit the glass in the door with one blow, unlock the door and walk right in.
