I have read lots of good advise here. I may have missed it, but no one has addressed what I see as obvious. The animals.
If you do not want to get rid of them, do not give up on renting. It is a really good market in the Phoenix area for people looking to rent. Considering the cost of buying and selling etc., I think you can negotiate to rent a place with the animals included. Since you could loose several thousand on two purchases and two sales (If you want to buy there then move back), you could afford to put up a substantial deposit for a rental or to pay a surcharge. I am a former landlord who loved animals; because I charged extra!
If you decide you want to live there (and do not decide until you have enjoyed the summer heat) renting will give you a chance to
make a better choice on a purchase.
You can find landords on Craigs list or in the paper or find a realtor who is looking for tennants for clients (tennant usually does not pay a fee). If you do not want to negotiate ask a realtor to negotiate for you.
Remember the words of the Godfather: "I'm gonna make him an offer he cant refuse". Do not ask if they take pets; ask how much extra for pets. When they say they do not take pets, tell them they do, that they just do not realize it yet. Or, ask them if they hate people who own animals (they probably do not take pets because of the potential damage from pets) then tell them you want to pay the cost they will incur from damage. If you have good credit, flaunt it. Ask them how much they loose when someone without pets moves out without paying rent.

All good advice, but I'm not selling up here.
And since I have no idea how long we will be down there buying seems a better alternative to renting. If, when we sell we lose a few thousand, that wouldn't equal the cost of rent over a couple years.
