With just a couple of days until Teri and I leave here, the weather is turning cold. Supposed to get down to 23 in the morning. So, at 11 pm I am out draining the hotwater heater and the lines under the kitchen sink. Put an electric heater in to help me out and opened all of the cabinets. I already had the main and black tanks dry. Wish me luck.

Good Luck!
I got back from Arizona just in time for the cold shot we got.
Fortunately, my lines were already dry. I just had to set up a heater for the main cabin, and a lamp in the water heater area.

If you're plugging in an electric heater, can't you just plug in the coach and turn on the hot water heater?

I actually considered turning on the furnace tonight here in PHX

Oh Man: 23 degrees is not necessarily a bad OMEN.

Dan, I think you will be OK.  When I camped with heat on in the coach at -7 degrees in Ely two years ago, the only victim was the Macerator pump.  The fresh water pump may have froze but it survived.  I think that above 20 degrees it is hard to freeze water in a heated coach.  Also, pollutants drop the freezing temperature in the holding tank.  I drained and blew out my system two nights ago - not because it was supposed to be 29 degrees, but because I plan to tow snowmobiles to play in the mountains for several days where outside temps will be very cold for a long period of time.

If you stay in cold country and do not have RV antifreeze available, consider some salt in your traps and holding tank.  Just let any rock salt dissolve before pumping it through your macerater.  While living in Boise, I was able to keep the bathroom lines from freezing by keeping the water heater plugged in with water in the tank.  I have limited hot water heater insulation so it heated all the plumbing in that area including the pipes that go across the ceiling.  When AVERAGE temperature was well above freezing, thermal mass protected the interior piping in the coach and a full fresh water tank kept the pipes from freezing in the area near that tank.

Irene and I look forward to visiting with you and Teri in Quartzsite.

another anti freeze you might wanna look into is isopropyl alcohol. can get it cheap in most drug stores, and mixed with water will help lower the freezing point considerably. not sure if it would effect an macerator however...

How absent minded can I be? Where were you last night at 11 when I was out there draining the dang thing. Sure, I could have turned it on. Mad

Well even in Oregon we get below freezing. :-)

In fact just had 4 nights of below freezing here in Portland, two of them down to about 17F. Caught me by surprise and hadn't drained anything yet. I know, I know, the winterizing thread has only been going on for a month or so, so no excuse. After the first night I went out and discovered drips of ice from faucets, & water pump froze up. Crap. Went out and bought a too-expensive propane space heater, 18Kbtu, hooked it to my 20# bottle, and warmed things up nicely. When the days warmed up above freezing everything thawed, pump came back on, water flows everywhere it's supposed to, no obvious leaks, so looks like I dodged a bullet this time. For the next week or so we'll have rain, ie well above freezing, so I should be able to get things drained before the next cold snap. BTW thanks to everyone who posted their expertise on the winterizing thread. Great, great stuff.

Teri and I skyped her mom last nite, she lives in Vancouver, Wa. She was telling us about yall's weather.
Well, I went ahead and told Teri how dumb I was by not flipping the water heater switch on. She just smiled.
Got the bra on covering the front of the GMC. Teri is working on inside. Temp is up to 50. Don't think we will get any more freezes before we pull out but I plan to wait til Sunday to put some fresh water in the tank.

You can "look into it" but you definitely want to stay away from it. Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) is toxic.

The primary toxicity with isopropanol is central nervous system depression. These CNS manifestations can include lethargy, ataxia, and coma. In addition, isopropanol is irritating to the GI tract. Therefore, abdominal pain, hemorrhagic gastritis, and vomiting can be observed. Unlike methanol and ethylene glycol, isopropanol does not cause a metabolic acidosis.

Ethylene glycol, ispropanol and methonal are three things that you don't want to introduce into your water system

Ethyl alcohol and propylene glycol are OK to use but be very cautious with any other alcohols or glycols. Most are toxic.

Dan, I got a chuckle out of your comment of covering up the front of your
GMC while wearing a bra. Funny how my mind works sometimes when I've eaten

Yea, I could have worded that differently. Last Spring Don Eddy sold me a black bra for front of the GMC. It was new but missing parts. I had an upholsterer fix me up and I put it on for a trip to Ga. On the way home the wind was bad and it pulled the driver's side off so I took it off on the side of the road. I think I have it hooked better now so it should hold. Looks good on our coach.
Dan,
ready to roll south and west next week
