I just noticed the upper Steering Column boot (inside the Drivers side access panel)on our Coach has split. The lower Coupling/joint (if that is the proper term) does not have a boot.
Wondering why the top one has a boot and the lower one does not.

The GMC came new with the 1 upper boot and no lower boot. I only have the upper boot in mine but we have almost no rain here.
The next time I need to replace this boot I will likely add the 2nd boot so you probably should also while you have it apart.

Here is quote from Gene's site of what I did

DUST BOOT
STEERING PARTS
CV joint Boot NAPA # 2410 fits- Denny
79 Accord CV.- Fit the CV very nicely and ended just above the shaft zerk.

This Boot covered the upper part of the shaft only, and left the Thermal Plastic splines exposed to the weather. After reading a reference to a 4X4 shock boot being used by somebody, and looking at a picture of the whole shaft in a Caspro catalog, I went to NAPA where I opened every box that had a shock
boot and found one that fit almost perfect. NAPA part # 63975 for $15.95. It covers the CV joint clear down to the zirk on the lower part of the shaft. The upper end was a tight fit and is held in place with the zip tie supplied with the boot. Lower part was just a little big so I fit the split
in the boot around the zirk and put a zip tie on either side of the zirk, keeping it from sliding either up or down, but still leaving the zirk out for greasing.

I actually now have a narrow band radiator clamp on the upper as I found that the zip ties would not hold...eventually deteriorated and broke loose.

Looking at the pictures, are these as durable (long lasting) as the originals?
Know anyone who has used them?
Thanks

I believe I got a direct replacement thru Jim (Burt and Faye) design. I pulled the entire unit. Very easy to replace but one of the worst jons ever. Dirt, grease and grime everywhere.

Yes, Jim K. has the upper and lower. I too used a radiator hose clamp on my top one. The zip tie gets greasy and slips off.

If it is the original, why the zip tie? My boot is held in place by a metal plate with screws around the boot. Maybe I am looking at the wrong item.

I'm thinking he's talking about the universal joint just above the steering box. I've never seen a rubber boot on that type of joint. It has a grease fitting on the joint rather than being submerged in grease like the upper constant velocity type joint.

The extra boot keeps dirt off the intermediate shaft's expansion joint to protect the blue plastic coating. This boot was not EOM with the coach.

Just my interpretation

The boot is useless unless you seal the opening at the shaft.
Get a dab or RTV and force it there.
This is where the water accumulates and eventually rusts the constant
velocity unit.
Dust boot is just that, it keeps the dust out .

I wonder if installing an "umbrella" cap attached through the CV joint bolts (could be just a plastic or aluminum cap angled down and away) might keep water from laying on the boot seal.

I doubt much water comes in from the grill and goes up and through the boot seal. Most of mine (and heck, I live in the desert) came from rainwater coming through the front hatch .

Maybe a nice tight hatch seal would protect the steering joint.

I have seen flexible plastic shields fastened, inside, to the upper lip of the hatch opening. (I have seen them under both hatches... electronics need protection too.) They deflect water to the front and can be lifted to reach behind. There are pictures... some where.
