Well, yesterday I came home to find a ticket on my coach for $50! I looked at it and the other box was marked and it was the old style pink slip ticket which are only hand witten and issued by actual Cops, not "Parking Enforcement" I did not recognize the code I was cited for so I called the violations bureau and spoke to a guy there who looked it up for me, he said the ticket was for lack of "Mud Gards" and on the ticket the Cop noted that they were "missing". When I told the guy well, its an old RV and never had mud flaps, and no provisions to mount them. He laughed and said that it was absurd that I got a ticket for that, and said that I should fight it. You know its Bull$h!t when the guy at the parking bureau says "fight it", since they usually just say pay up.

I've had my rig for 2 and a half years now, and have never gotten a ticket of any kind on it. So I was wondering have any other GMC'ers gotten such tickets? or is Los Angeles just that broke, and the LAPD just that bored? Now I know why they take so long to show up when you call to report a shooting or robbery in this town, they are too busy writing mud flap tickets! makes me feel so good that they are there to "Protect and Serve" heh...

What a crock of s---. That is a new one on me. I had my coach in LA for about 10 years before I installed the small mud guards that I got at a parts store says GMC on them they are for SUV's. I put them on to help protect my toad.

What is the actual wording of the law that was cited? I have a hard time believing that this type of ticket can be issued when the coach was not "operating." (It ISN'T a parking ticket.) It could be argued that you were going to GET the "missing" mud flaps rather than driving it home!

Fight it? I would. (But it might not be cost effective to fight it... some places count on that fact.)

Did Robocop write the code number on the ticket? You may want to see if there is a federal, state or local law that requires mudflaps on a vehicle that is wider than X, longer than x, taller than x, has x number of axels and so on.

An example of this is Federal Guidelines require Cab Clearance Lights on vehicles over 80 inches wide. What cab clearance lights have to do with the width of the vehicle is beyond me but they are required anyhow. Considering that I shaved mine off, I hope I never run into Robocop.

I searched California mudflap requirement and found this law.

Fenders and Mudguards

27600. No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread. This section does not apply to those vehicles exempt from registration, trailers and semitrailers having an unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds, or any vehicles manufactured and first registered prior to January 1, 1971, having an unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds.

Looks like you can argue this one considering the GMC has plenty of "fender" and the body offers adequate protection to minimize spray. Also it looks like the law went on the books prior to the GMC going into production and I'm sure GM's legal department was aware of this law when the motorhome was built as it would have been required to comply with all federal and state laws at the time.

If the judge rules against you, I'm going into the mudflap business. If you lose that would mean every car and light duty truck on the road will need flaps too. It will also be a boon for the cops. They'll need handheld ticket printing devices so they can write those $50 tickets fast enough to catch every car that they see.

Good luck on this one.

If you want mud flaps got to AutoZone and get #7 mud flaps. They fit perfectly.

I sure would like to see the law. I also would fight it.

LOL ~ This Is A FIRST For Me And I Have Owned Cortez and GMC Motorhomes since 1965 ~

Go to Campers World or a RV store and get a 'short grass skirt'
then attatch it to the body in front of the rear bumper ~
UPS mounts the short grass skirts on the side of their trailers, just above the wheels
to control the side spray when it is raining ~

If it "never rains in southern California" as the song goes, why do you need mudflaps? Tell them it is historically factory GM correct, especially if you have the T skirts in place.

Ken,

I'm sorry to tell you that Auto Zone has stopped selling those mud flaps.

Last year I stopped at Auto Zone after Auto Zone until I finally got enough
sets for Lanny Young and myself.

I did find out that O'Reilly's had them.

Emery,
I just spent some time on Amazon searching for the flap with no results. What search term did you use? Got a part # or something?

I just tried it. I put "mud flaps" in the search box and got a list of
them with pictures. The ones with the GMC logo was about the 6 th one.
On the list.

I'll do it again and get the URL for you.

Emery,

Those mud flaps are not the ones Ken or I was "talking" about they are a
flat sheet. I do like the fact that they say GMC, however!

The ones Ken and I have conform to the body of the GMC just behind the wheel
well.

Larry,

I drive over to the O'Reilly store later today and see if I can find the
part numbers for you.

I am aware of the ones you have I felt that there are pros and cons
on the ones that wrap around. They do form a "pocket" on the outside
that is hard to keep clean. I also felt that they don't extend to the
outside enough.

I am happy with the ones that I bought as they conform well to the
inside of the wheel well and i like the ability to adjust them outward
and downward a little when mounting them to give a bit more protection
to the body.

Nice to have options though. Buyers might to look at GMCs that have
them mounted before buying.

Do a google search for "mud flap ticket California fight" and you will see 75000 pages of ranting about this subject. Seems like they are trying to correct the state budget problem with a single law.

It also sounds to me like someone may have called to complain but the
cop didn't find any real way to cite you. He had to write something in
front of the complaintant.

Fight the ticket and win. It may have just been a way to get your
attention.

I used to runs these style guards, they don't really keep the any
toad cleaner, but they do keep the big chunky stuff from damaging the
paint and windshields.
