Hi Mike,

I have a 77 Royale and here is what I know. The rear battery in the front is a house battery and I have mine connected to a solar unit on the roof which keeps it up most of the time. The rear battery in the generator compartment is also a house battery and in connected in line to the front unit. I have disconnected it from the generator for charging so that it is only charged from the motor, solar unit, or the busz box. The total system starts the gen. set. Seems to work best this way. I run a deep cycle battery up front as the house and a deep cycle in the rear and have always had good power. I change out each of the house batteries every three years regardless of condition. I like the Costco RV/marine battery.
