How many batteries would be in 78 Royale and where? In the one I have there is one by the generator, three in front on the passenger side and three on the drivers side.

I have not put power to the system because there seems to be some creative wiring. There are battery cables running in all directions. Each battery has a blue sea switch wired into the negative side of the battery. I have not seen this before.

Thanks for the help.

George

Good luck.

A normal choach has
:
1. One for starting the generator and it seem you found that in the rear.

2. One for starting and running the engine. I would look for that one next. It should be on the passenger side. Follow the big cable from the starter to the boost relay and then over to the battery. This will be the engine battery and you can get that battery out of the picture.

3. One or two house batteries. It looks like you have 5 of them left. I'll bet all 5 are house batteries for extended dry camping. I'll bet each of the ones with blue sea switches are for the house and the PO made it so he could turn each battery on as he ran others low.

Once you get those figured out I'd be interested in how he charges them all.

Good luck
Ken B.

I agree with the "good luck" and the "creative wiring."

We are talking about a ROYALE from Coachman (Wired differently than a GM upfitted coach.)

MOST Royales left the factory with a 12v engine battery in the right front with a 12v house battery next to it. They also had a 12v battery in the rear next to the generator WIRED IN PARRALELL with the front house battery through a large cable ran along the fuel fill pipe.

Not the best...

Are these 'extra' batteries 12v or 6v?

While discussing batteries, I have a few question about a 77 Royale, rear bath.

Two batteries in the passenger side engine compartment. Which one is the house and which one is the engine? I don't see any wire going back to the generator battery wired in parallel.

One battery in the generator compartment to start the generator. Is that all this battery does since I'm not seeing any wires going to the front of the coach?

Battery boost switch. My Palm Beach is a toggle where you have to hold it to aux and then it reverts back to main. The Royale is a similar looking switch to select either main or aux but the switch stays in that position either main or aux. I only have one battery in the Royale now, front position under passenger side engine compartment and it will start the coach with the switch in either position, main or aux. Confusing?

The external 20 amp power cord comes out the far drivers side rear. Where do you plug into the generator. My Palm Beach has a separate receptacle to plug power cord in for generator use. It's in the same compartment as the cord and city water receptacle middle side of drivers side.

Thanks

I do my best to answer, But keep in mind, Coachman models varied from coach to coach more than the GMC upfitted models. Also it has been over 30 years for PO's to make changes. IE: Your results may vary.

The physical location doesn't matter as long as the cables will reach. You can trace the wires to be sure... the one that is connected to the starter is the engine battery. BUT from you comment on how the boost switch is working, the battery that is currently connected is the engine battery.

Coachman ran a single large black wire from the right front, zip tyed to the frame across the front, and draped along the other parts down the left side to the generator compartment. The exact routing seems to be determined by the worker on that day. Some workers are better than others. A PO may not have liked the routing and removed the cable. (I can see this happening.)

1973 and 1974 coaches AND most Transmodes left GM with a non-spring loaded boost switches. Some where I saw instructions on putting a small spring (ball point pen) inside the switch.

The boost solenoid does NOT select what battery you are using (like the fuel tank switch) it connects the engine and house batteries TOGETHER.

Coachman models left the factory with 30 amp power cords. You do not have to plug the cable into anything to get power from the generator. On the main 115v circuit breaker panel there should be two "input" breakers with a flat metal toggle keeping you from turning both on at the same time. One is for shore power, the other for the generator. Kind of like a manual transfer switch.

I have seen that Royales also have a second panel that directs power for the rear air conditioner. I do not have experience with this panel.
