I was just wanting to get opinions on replacement sofa's. I was looking to to get one large around 72" to 74" and one smaller one around 58" to 60". These would actually be across from one another and would like them to fold flat into sleeping area for the kids. Any suggestions on what brand or styles work best in the GMC. Comfort is important as well. I don't want something that is not going to be comfortable. I will probably be looking at leather due to kids and easier to clean. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I did the same thing with two fold down sofas I purchased from RV Surplus Salvage in Elkhart, Indiana. By spacing them correctly, it forms a large sleeping surface behind the cockpit in my Palm Beach. I built some shelves that just cover the tops of the sofas when they are upright, and it seems to have come together well.
They are covered in a fabric, so I think that Jim Bounds sofas may work well for you as they can be ordered in a more durable surface. As with most projects, it just depends on how much you want to spend.

Charley,
It would help the GMCnet greatly if you put your location in your
signature area. It helps us determine if we can be of help to you and
we are close to you.
That said, I have a new never been slept on FlexSteel sofa/bed that
came out of my 75 Avion that the PO had put in just before I bought
it. It is a fabric and not vinyl/leather covered unit. It is the tan
colored fabric. If you live close enough this could be a good deal.
I will post pictures and dimension tomorrow for anyone interested.
It listed in the catalog for $625 new and I am asking $280.

JR,
What is the length of your sofa and more importantly - where are you
located - didn't see your location in your signature area?
I live in the Memphis area but will be driving from NJ to Memphis sometime
next month - with room for a sofa.
Thanks

Charley,
Here's what I used:
http://www.gmccoop.com/seats.htm
And here's how I did it:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5576
The sofa sits very well and is quite comfortable. I can't vouch for how it sleeps (I sleep in the back WITH MY WIFE, thank you) but Jim B says it is quite comfortable to sleep on. These are not cheap, but they art a classic case of "you get what you pay for". Jim has them custom made and they are available in different lengths and a variety of fabrics. We went with the "Pleather". It is a really nice fabric and is easily cleanable. The sofa folds out flat very easily and provides a nice wide bed.

Carl,
Very nice installation. I am working with a retired furniture maker and we
are making the gun/fishing cabinets for the GMCs. I want to do something
similar to what you did. Does the sofa cushion hinge up for storage above
the drawers or are the draws the primary storage with a fixed panel below
the cushion?
I want to shorten the original sofa so I can add a swing up extension to the
sink counter top.
By shortening the sofa about two inches I can add a much cleaner looking
extension.
Your thoughts.

Tom,
Thank you for the compliment.
Although the seat cushion lifts up a little bit as part of the 'jack-knife' action, while folding the sofa flat, it does not provide adequate access to the area under it. The drawers are the primary storage although there is limited access to the rest of the area under the sofa. We use it for the filler cushions, along with a few other bulky items that can be stored behind the sofa. The design of the sofa supports and the folding mechanism takes up a lot of space under the sofa. It was the one thing I was disappointed in, that I couldn't utilize that space better, but I adapted and quickly changed my plans.
As it turned out, it provided plenty of extra storage for the way we use our coach.

My old sofa used to be simply a storage box with a bottom amd back cushion. Nice for storage, but not too comfortable and the cushions slid out all the time.
I replaced it with a jackknife from a conversion van. The sofa is as long as a van is wide (about 6 feet) and is very comfortable to sleep on. And it only cost $30 from the men's mall.
The couch has a natural slope back so kids are less inclined (ha ha) to fall out of bed. There is still storage, but the bed doesn't quite lift up as high, so getting the floor jack out is a little more trouble.
I'm looking for a new home for my old cushions if you need them.

Sorry work has been crazy for me here lately. Making it hard to find time to do much of anything. I am completely redoing the interior of a 1976 Edgemont. I am in Magnolia Texas. I did get a response from Jim at Cooperative that it could be done but would be custom. I decided to do away with the dinette which leaves me around 72" maybe 74" on the passenger side for a full couch. I have shortened the counter/cabinets on the driver side so that it is a sink and microwave which leaves me 59" to maybe 60" on the drivers side. I was hoping to put in a small love type seat matching the larger couch. This is where it gets interesting. I was hoping to have the large couch and the love seat lay flat into beds at the same time. The problem is that I am having a hard time finding them as most convert to a bed at about 48" to 49". That would be to wide with both open. I was hoping maybe someone here had tried this before with success. You have to forgive me as I am new to GMC community here.

What condition are the foam in your old cushions?
Thanks,
|
Cushy. No breakdown or water damage. The jackknife I got came with the two Flexsteel front seats I found, so I took it.
The cushions are in a closet in my garage and taking up some space. I've got two original front seats too.
