I recall the head of urology at the University of *redacted* (yes, this is a real story): he was from the old school, but very knowledgeable. He was a genius all around and an absolute wizard in physical diagnosis, but somewhat notorious: he would sometimes "go bare" for the most sensitive possible prostate examination. Well, the new Urology residents always started on July 1, generally fresh to town from wherever they'd just finished their surgical internship six days earlier. They would show up for attending rounds at 05:30 on July 1, sometimes sadly unaware of the rules. The chairman ran a tight ship, and would not waste a minute hunting up supplies when they'd been forgotten by the junior resident. Afterwards, wiping his finger on the lapel of the unfortunate resident, he would sternly warn: "Always remember to bring the gloves!" This didn't happen every year, because the new residents were often looked upon kindly by the nursing night shift, who knew the rules.
